Impact of the Position: Facilitates scientific research, publications, and
technology transfer activities of the USDA, ARS, Eastern Regional Research
Center.
Effectively supports the Scientific Information Resources (SIR) Unit
through handling, organization, and manipulation of documents and data
contributing to the research mission of the Center. Learned new software
skills, bibliographic, scientific, and information management terminologies
and procedures. Utilizes a wide array of software and databases related to
information retrieval, management and delivery. Expanded responsibilities
include more
complex tasks and independence.
Information, Retrieval, Access, and Management
Information Retrieval and Document Delivery - Searches the USDA, National
Agricultural Library (NAL) catalog, the National Library of Medicine (NLM)
catalog, and the Library of Congress (LC) catalog, and the OCLC database
for requested information. Performs searches on the SCOPUS, Food Science
and Technology Abstracts, BIOSIS, EBSCOHost, and Google databases. Enters
bibliographic information into the ALA Document Delivery forms and sends
them by email to NLM. Processes documents received through ARIEL software,
email, fax, and package delivery methods. Quickly, sends requested
resources to researchers. Tracks resources on loan from other libraries,
returns these documents when due, and maintains document delivery
statistics.
Content Management - Identifies bibliographic information from books,
journals, reports, etc. to describe the resources and adds the Librarian
provided Library of Congress subject headings and classification to the
analog (typed catalog cards) and digital records. Organizes the shelf list
/ inventory catalog by call number, assigns the accession numbers and
barcodes to the physical information resources, and processes resources for
loan. Keeps statistics on books purchased and purged from the collection.
Updates and maintains the inventory catalog.
Serials Control - Enters bibliographic information of incoming journals
into REMO software, updates journal holdings, and claims missing journal
issues.

Collection Management - Arranges resources in the physical collection by
titles, call numbers, or subjects. Moves, removes, and shelves resources
as needed.
Data Management
The SAS Databases (relational databases) include five connected databases.
Enters and updates data in the fields of the records in the Order Database,
the Reference Database, the Regular Loan, and Long Term Loan Databases.
These databases provide data for the online SAS SIR catalog. Have a
working understanding of data standards for the MARC (Machine-Readable
Cataloging) format fields, LC Subject Headings, and cataloging rules.
Supplement the maintenance of the Document Delivery Database and log.
Communication and Customer Service
The initial point of contact for questions regarding research materials
located in the SIR physical collection. Provides timely, knowledgeable,
and courteous responses to information requests. Interacts with other
Center units, Location Administrative Officer, Center Director, ARS, North
Atlantic Area, other agencies, libraries, and visitors. Presents and
creates a pleasant and cooperative working attitude and environment.
Administrative Functions
Familiar with ARS correspondence procedures, AD 700 Requisition form, ALA
Document Delivery form, ARS Time and Attendance forms. Have created and
formatted many Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
* Biofuels Models Users Survey Project - Gathered and organized information
to demonstrate the impact of the biofuels computational models on industry
and the academic community. Setup several Microsoft Excel files as
directed. Received copies of the emails sent to and from the researchers
regarding the biofuels models. Received copies of the survey from the
models' users. Analyzed, extracted, and entered the data into the
Microsoft Excel files. Maintained the ongoing files by researchers' names,
company or organization, and value of the models.
* Analysis of the SIR Journals Collection Project - Assisted in gathering
information on exactly what journals volumes and years were present and how
much shelf space they occupied. Then, the journal collection was divided
into four groups by electronic license, no license, long-term need, and
archival. Worked on parts of the Microsoft Excel file by entering the
complete journal holdings and the space occupied. Assisted the Librarian
and formatted multiple files. The multitask required great attention to
detail and to quality.

books were most requested by researchers through Document Delivery.
Created Microsoft Excel file with columns for dates ordered and received,
requestors, journals / books requested, research unit, and vendor. Data
was extracted from a manual log and entered into the Microsoft Excel file.
Sorted the file multiple ways by journal or book titles, requestors, and
