EMPLOYMENT HISTORY
Z-Axis Inc, Phelps, NY 2008 - 2010
Designed offline switching 30 watt power supplies for both the Medical
Industry and Industrial applications. The industrial application required a
wide temperature rang of -40C to +70C and high energy suppression from
lightning strikes. A 450 watt switching power supply was also designed for
a mobile application with the NYCTA.
Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY 2007 - 2008
As a Staff Electrical Engineer, I designed several switching power supplies
for the Re-manufacture of military vehicles such as the Humvee and the LAV
and others. The power supplies were rated from 1 watt to 100 watts and
input voltages from 8 volts to 175 volts. A special switcher was designed
for the Load Dump characteristics normally found in vehicles.
Clever Devices (Aerotek), Rochester, NY 2005 - 2007
Power Supply Engineer. Designed several switching power supplies ranging
from 5 watts to over 300 watts used in the vehicle industry. Created a
unique switching circuit for the protection from load dumps, inductive
spikes and transients, jump starts, and reverse voltages. Design used a
technique never before used in the vehicle industry which resulted in low
power dissipation during a Load Dump. Performed circuit design, simulation,
and custom design of magnetics for all switchers.
Burleigh Instruments (EXFO Burleigh Products Group), Victor, NY 1999 -
2005
Senior Electrical Engineer. Provided analytical problem solving skills for
the Test and Measurement product line which created solutions to long
standing problems that previously could not be solved. Provided many design
solutions for Laser Test and Measurement products as well as the Life
Science and Micropositioning product lines. Project Leader for the next
generation of Inchworm Motor Controller electronics. Completed designs for
a NASA project involving a cryogenic inchworm linear motor. Developed new
power electronics under the DARPA program to extend the piezo inchworm
motor drive capability over 18 times the current production motor.
Developed a class D switching power amplifier that consumes 1/3 the power
of a class A amplifier while driving piezo electric motors.
J A Smith & Co Inc, Geneseo, NY 14454 1989 - 2000
Owner/Consultant of J.A. Smith & Co., Inc. Designed driver circuits for
solid state lasers, laser diode thermal electric coolers, galvanometer
driver electronics, electronic timers for wheel chair patients, and piezo
electric pusher electronics. Currently have products and electronic test
fixtures for index, lead, and involute testing of gears. Developed
firmware for the 8051 micro controller and software for PCs written in 'C'
and assembly. Developed low level code for PCs such as TSRs, RS232, and
IEEE-488 interfacing packages.
LaserMax, Inc, Rochester, NY 1993 - 1996
As Chief Engineer, designed all of the gun sight lasers modules and 98% of
all the industrial and scientific laser modules. The gun sight designs
included the electronics as well as all the mechanical designs for
engineering plastic battery caps, optical alignment and focusing,
mechanical switching, metal housings, along with coil and leaf springs.
Burleigh Instruments, Fishers, NY 1984 - 1989
Project Leader, responsible for the design of two different closed loop
micro positioning systems which included high voltage driver electronics to
drive piezo-electric inchworm motors with multiple micro controllers.
Designed firmware for both the 68000 processor and the 8051 micro
controller in both assembly and 'C' languages. Designed many analog and
analog/digital circuits for various products such as Inchworm Controllers,
High Finesse Etalon, Pulsed Wavemeter, and STM (Surface Tunneling
Microscope). Designed several current to voltage converters for optical
devices and the STM.
Verax Systems Inc, Fairport, NY 1983 - 1984
Senior Engineer
Responsible for the documentation and component specification of an
evidential Breath Analysis Computer (BAC) instrument. Conducted tests on
the BAC to determine it s RFI susceptibility threshold and also the
threshold of the built in wideband RFI detector. Redesigned circuits to
reduce their RFI susceptibility. Initiated hardware and software design of
a QC inspection system which included an optical transducer assembly, A/D
converter electronics, and microprocessor interface to the Motorola 6805
processor.
Quality Measurements Systems, Fairport, NY 1976 - 1983
Senior Design Engineer responsible for new product design of optical
transducer assemblies, power supplies, and seven-segment display
assemblies. Duties included the responsibility for the design of prototype
and pre-production models, generation of factory and field test procedures,
and purchase component specifications. Gained experience with 8-bit
microcomputer hardware and software designs which included the 8080, 8085,
8049, and Z80.
General Railway Signal Co, Rochester, NY
Senior Design Engineer responsible for the design of the transmitter for a
new type of electrified railroad track circuit. Duties included
supervision of engineering aids and co-op students, design and test new
products, writing engineering specifications, manuals, and test procedures,
troubleshooting of railroad equipment such as track circuits, radar units
and switch machine controllers.
Transmation, Inc, Rochester, NY
Senior Design Engineer responsible for new product design in the 'Tester
Series of instrumentation. Duties included design and test of new ideas
for products, build and test pre-production prototypes, design and build
factory test equipment for the production of the new products. Also
included was coordination of documentation, writing of factory and Q.C.
test procedures.
Health-Tronics, Inc, Victor, NY
Founder/Owner helped organize and obtain financing for our company called
Health-Tronics, Inc. Designed and developed an electrocardiograph (ECG)
multi-channel communication system and applied for two patents on same.
Provided support to the Laboratory Division for instrumentation evaluation,
preventive maintenance and calibration, troubleshooting and repair.
Xerox Corporation, Webster, NY
Design Engineer responsible for the electronic and electro-mechanical
design of a variable speed xerographic bandwidth compression scanner and
printer breadboards. The designs involved various types of servo systems
for controlling the xerographic drum, paper drive, high speed rotating
polygon mirror, and special circuits for driving stepper motors.
Concurrently performed experimental work on light modulation of short arc
