1981-1985
Watkins Motor Lines
Columbus, Ga.
Responsible for managing the outbound shift, which included dispatching P&D
drivers for pick-up and deliveries, contract drivers dispatching, routing
and cutting freight bills, supervising outbound dock crew, and handling
maintenance on vehicles. Prior to joining the organization load averages,
rehandling cost and P&D hours were at unacceptable levels. After completing
initial analysis I supervised the outbound dock crew on loading trailers
more effectively. Studied carefully to reduce rehandling cost and studied
pick-ups and delivers to reduce P&D cost. As a result the load averages
were increased from 24,000lbs to 32,000 lbs for the year 1984. The
reahndling and line haul cost were reduced considerable by picking up loads
to ride and by direct loading around break bulk terminals whenever
possible. The P&D hours were cut while revenue increased. After
accomplishing these task I was promoted to Operations Manager in a larger
terminal in Jacksonville, Fl. This terminal generates more revenue than any
other terminal in the Southeast region. Chose to stay in Columbus Ga. Area
and seek other employment.
