EXPERIENCE:

****-****: Usability Researcher II, Volt (Microsoft).

Implemented usability research for the Microsoft Office Live Workspace

online service. Techniques used included benchmarking, formal study,

qualitative and quantitative design and analysis. Areas of study included

first user experience, document and workspace sharing, comparative analysis

of competitive services, and regular benchmarking of core usage scenarios.

2007-2008: Usability Researcher II, Volt (Microsoft).

Implemented usability research for the second version of the Microsoft Zune

player and software. Techniques used included benchmarking, formal study,

qualitative and quantitative design and analysis. Areas of study included

device UI, PC client software, online media marketplace, and customized e-

commerce applications.

Key skills included project management, usability best practices, deep

understanding of media usage patterns, user-centered design focus,

interpersonal facilitation.

2003-2006: Senior Usability Researcher, Washington Mutual.

Created intranet usability program. Designed, recruited, administered,

analyzed and disseminated usability studies with employees and the

corporate intranet. Used common techniques including expert review,

personas, field study, benchmarking, formal study, qualitative and

quantitative design and analysis. Special focus on involving stakeholders

throughout process and tailoring communication of findings/results for

specific needs.

2002-2003: Information Architect, Washington Mutual.

Responsible for direction and strategy for intranet IA. Wrote a best

practices interaction guideline document that is still in use today.

Key skills included project management, IA and usability best practices,

solid presentation/public speaking, user-centered design focus,

interpersonal facilitation.

2000-present: Software architect, Phosphor Media.

Design and execute e-commerce solutions for small businesses (< $1M sales).

Specialize in building on Miva Merchant, low-cost product database and

shopping cart for dynamic e-commerce sites. Developed client-based content

management tool in Access/VBA.

Key skills include project management, content design and management,

database design and implementation, VBA and Windows API programming,

product and service marketing.

1998-2000: Content/New media consultant, Portal Productions.

Advised clients on content management and design issues/strategies. One of

my largest clients was BroadVision Inc.; on their behalf have created HTML

prototypes, site redesigns and conducted content publishing workshops for

Fortune 500 corporations such as Ernst and Young, USAA, Motorola, Cisco,

Phillips, Universal Studios, and Merrill Lynch.

Key skills included project management, information architecture,

training/presentation to groups, knowledge management, technology and

strategic analysis.

1990-1997: Audio designer/researcher, Microsoft Corp.

Founded audio portion of multimedia group that shipped all multimedia CD-

ROM titles from 1991-1997, as well as online media 1995 onward. Responsible

for building teams and workflows for the creation of audio and music,

researching and incorporating useful technology, and creating seminars and

intranet content for media staff.

Key skills included project management, team building, schedule and budget

creation, production process definition, technology research.

1988-1994: Publications manager/Design consultant, Midisoft Corp.

Created all publications, including marketing material, manuals and online

help, for music software manufacturer. Help to create competitive user

interface. Consulted on design for products and created functional

specifications.

Key skills included writing, layout and editorial functions, UI design, and

product design.

Microsoft products including Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, PowerPoint,

Project, Visual Basic.

Adobe InDesign, PhotoShop.

Macromedia Flash, FreeHand.

Media tools such as Sony Sound Forge/Vegas, Adobe Audition, Digidesign Pro

Tools, Cakewalk Sonar.

INTERESTS:

Public speaking and presentation. Active Toastmaster since 1999. In every

position since 1990, have presented and spoken to groups, both inside

companies and outside (e.g. within an industry).

Avid musician. Played, performed and recorded guitar and vocal within

styles ranging from folk, blues, rock, jazz, classical and original music.
