Professional Experience
Fugro Seafloor Surveys, Inc Seattle, WA
1996-2009
Senior Systems Engineer 2005-2009
> Led the design and development of a battery operated GPS and Iridium
based asset tracking system. This system was used to track, locate
and recover lost assets worldwide. The project required the design
and layout of a congested circuit board containing power isolation,
RS232 isolation, battery charging, two switching power supplies and
multiple interface circuits. The embedded processor was programmed in
C and Assembly. Supporting software was written with Visual Studio.
Mechanical design of titanium housing rated to 3000m water depth
accomplished using Alibre 3D CAD. Developed code to log and view
asset positions in Google Earth. Collaboration with antenna design
company was required to produce pressure rated antenna. Wrote user
manual and supporting technical documentation for end users.
> Designed a custom high throughput digital to Ethernet data logging
device using an embedded processor board programmed with assembler and
C. Supporting code written with Visual Studio.
> Investigated use of LabView as data acquisition system in equipment
upgrade by building a data simulator and user interface prototype
within LabView.
> Aided in all aspects of autonomous vehicle development. Including
system debug, testing, and validation of inertial navigation,
propulsion, payload, communications and control systems. Analyzed and
debugged supplier code at the shop and in the field to allow work to
continue.
Senior R&D Engineer 2000-2005
> Responsible for code and hardware upgrades and maintenance for
sophisticated data acquisition and processing system. This system was
comprised of a PC based user interface that monitored and controlled a
bank of 10 DSP based circuit boards and other data acquisition
equipment. Each of the boards used thousands of lines of code written
in C and assembler.
> Investigated navigation hardware and code when issue with data arose
during data processing. Developed test program and data acquisition
system that revealed problems with setup and internal workings of
hardware. Wrote test code using Visual Studio and evaluated test data
in Matlab. Compared a second, higher precision system alongside the
original hardware and recommend different configuration settings for a
short term improvement and replacement of navigation hardware with the
higher precision system as a long term fix.
> Continued development of acoustic tracking system by improving
existing analog circuitry and designing circuit board that
incorporated remote gain control, I2C communications, programmable
logic, D2A, op-amp circuits and digital filter integration for
improved signal acquisition. Used Matlab to simulate, test and debug
data processing algorithms and provide some of the code used within
the system. Designed autonomous calibration buoy with GPS and RF link
using PC104 stack as control and communication center. Code written
in C and Assembly.
> Designed and laid out a digital signal rerouting circuit board to fix
a flaw in newly designed and populated circuit board build. This fix
allowed the company to continue using the flawed boards without losing
the money already invested in the new build.
> Designed custom, 500 Watt, AC-DC power supply.
R&D Project Engineer 1996-2000
> Designed highly integrated user station comprised of multiple
computers, monitors, power supplies, printer, keyboard pullout drawer
and other hardware using AutoCAD.
> Software, hardware and mechanical design and maintenance for other
systems used and sold by the company.
> Refined and evaluated systems for integration into equipment used by
the company.
> Performed field work using the companies' equipment throughout the
world.
SCP Global Technologies Boise, ID
1991-1996
R&D Project Engineer
> Researched, designed and brought to production an infrared LED optical
detector. This project required the simultaneous detection of 25
separate objects in very close proximity. AutoCAD was used to design
and integrate the object holders and optical prisms required to fit
everything into a small footprint. The circuit was mostly analog
consisting of 25 sets of infrared emitters and detectors, each with a
pair of tuned transistor circuits. The output was fed into a PLC
where the data was processed. Matlab was used to simulate and
optimize the optical characteristics of various materials.
> Design and development of laser and fiber optic liquid level system.
AutoCAD used for the complex mounting hardware. LabView was used for
control and data processing.
> Design and development of inexpensive, compact, micro-stepping, step
motor control system.
> Design of test apparatus for production line testing of thermal
probes. Included the development of a thermal well and repeatable
testing and verification procedures.
> Software, hardware and mechanical design of systems used and sold by
the company.
> Design of robotic sensors and test equipment including motor control,
lasers and optics
> Design and refinement of process and temperature control systems.
> Installation and optimization of equipment at customer site.
United States Marine Corps
1986-1992
Sergeant and Squad Leader in the Reserves
> Electronics Technician on a wide variety of equipment
> Secret security clearance granted.
