Assistant Vice President, Human Resources
ACT, formerly American College Testing, is an independent, not-for-profit
organization that provides more than a hundred assessment, research,
information, and program management services in the broad areas of
educational planning, career planning, and workforce development. It is
based in Iowa City, Iowa and employs over 1,800 individuals nationwide. As
the Assistant Vice President, Human Resources, my position reports to the
Chief Executive Officer and is responsible for human resources, affirmative
action, diversity, payroll, employee ethics committee, staff education and
organizational development. I oversaw the implementation of Oracle HRIS
system and the corporate ethics policy and training.
Benedictine Health System. Duluth, Minnesota (March 1995 through August
1996)
Corporate Director of Human Resources
Benedictine Health System operated hospitals and long term care facilities
in five states. It had revenues in excess of $234 million dollars. As the
Corporate Director of Human Resources, my position reported to the Health
System's President/ Chief Operating Officer. My primary responsibilities
included benefit (health, dental and pension) plan administration, labor
negotiations for the select member institutions, conducting the biannual
mission and values (employee) survey, senior management recruitment, being
a human resources consultant to member institutions governing boards, and
due diligence team member for the acquisition of two new facilities and
implementation of two hospital management contracts. I left this position
due to a family member's illness hindering their relocation.
Trinity Regional Health System. (United Medical Center) Rock Island,
Illinois (August 1990 through March 1995)
Vice President, Human Resources and Education
Trinity Regional Health System is an integrated health care provider. At
the time, Trinity had two hospital campuses, a community mental center, a
physician hospital

organization, an ambulance service, home health, hospice and a network of
physician clinics. Trinity was the product of two separate facility
mergers in which I participated as
a member of the leadership teams charged with the facility merger
implementations and workforce integrations. As Vice President of Human
Resources and Education, my
position reported to the President/ Chief Executive Officer and served
routinely as "administrator on call". In addition to being responsible for
human resources and education services, my role provided direction to
social services, volunteers, auxiliary, pastoral care, physician
recruitment, safety and security. I left this position to join my former
CEO at Benedictine Health.
Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital. Council Bluffs, Iowa (August 1983
through August 1990)
Director of Human Resources
Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital is a 250-bed hospital with several
community clinic locations. It employed - at the time - 950 staff. As
Director of Human Resources, my position reported to the President/ Chief
Executive Officer. My responsibilities included human resources, labor
relations, staff education, legislative liaison through the Iowa Hospital
Association, and directing the onsite childcare center.
State of Nebraska. Lincoln, Nebraska (January 1979 through August 1983)
Personnel Administrator, Department of Public Institutions
The Department of Public Institutions operated eight facilities caring for
the State's mental health, developmentally disabled and aged populations.
The agency licensed and monitored all community-based programs providing
mental health and substance abuse treatment services. The Personnel
Administrator reported to the agency's Director - its chief administrative
officer. The position was responsible for agency-wide labor contracts, the
affirmative action plan, and the agency's management development plan.
Prior to assuming the Personnel Administrator's position, my
responsibilities were managing the agency's position classification and
compensation requests under the supervision of the Nebraska Department of
Personnel.
St. Ambrose College. Davenport, Iowa (August 1974 through January, 1979)
Associate Director of Admission.
St. Ambrose is private liberal arts institution. The Associate Director of
Admissions was responsible for leading student recruitment and alumni
efforts in two states (Wisconsin and Illinois). The position was also
responsible for developing course articulation (transfer) programs with
community colleges and the marketing of the management development program
and continuing education programs.
