NARRATIVE STATEMENT
I have been around cameras and photography for a long time. I was given a
Canon T-70 for Christmas one year and gradually built a nice little system,
eventually switching to auto focus and now digital. I graduated from
college in 1986, majoring in Communications, and took several classes in
photography and film/television production.
My father, who had been shooting weddings, portraits, etc. since I was a
kid, opened his own photography business in 1990, Homefolks Photo. I
joined him in this venture later that year.
We were Memphis' premiere used camera shop, dealing with all types of
cameras from 110, disc, APS, Polaroid, 35mm, and medium and large format
cameras. We did camera repair and even had darkroom equipment, studio
lighting, backdrops, slide projectors and some video equipment in our
inventory; all of which I dabbled in. Soon after I joined Homefolks, we
expanded into the adjacent storefront to make room for a studio, a
photography classroom, and bridal consultation area. With the introduction
of digital photography becoming prevalent, my father decided to retire and
we shut the store down, liquidating our entire inventory.
My Homefolks experience helped me to land the job in the 1-hour photo lab
at Sam's Club. This minilab experience was a new addition to my
photography career. Because of my camera knowledge, I was also put in
charge of camera sales at the store. With film on the decline, I pushed
for more digital-friendly options for customers, which were later developed
and put into use.
Deciding that freelance was a good venue for my photography skills, I
decided to begin my own business, Kevin Lewter Photography. After
acquiring my first digital camera, I honed my Photoshop skills and expanded
my digital photography knowledge. My years of retail experience have
helped me to offer exceptional customer service and great photos. Now,
five years later and with a carefully developed website
(www.bigKphotos.com), my business is my focus.
