STREAMLINED PRODUCTION PROCESSES SAVING $2M ANNUALLY. PRODUCTION AT THE

SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE WAS SPLIT IN TWO AREAS, CAUSING DELAYS,

INTERRUPTIONS, AND INCREASED COSTS. ANALYZED PROCESSES AND DESIGNED FLOW

CHART. COMBINED ALL FUNCTIONS INTO ONE AREA, ARRANGING AN EFFICIENT

WORKFLOW. REDUCED STAFF 30%.

Installed new technology, cutting expenses $500K. Asked by Chronicle CEO to

locate savings opportunities. Reviewed production operations area where

1000 photos per week are color-corrected. Researched/installed technology

to auto-correct simple photos and move more complex photos to next level.

Reduced staff 50%. Improved efficiency.

Consolidated operations, reducing costs. Declining revenue and circulation

at the Chronicle presented opportunity to consolidate all printing

operations. Adjusted printing deadlines. Changed production lineup.

Positioned two distribution facilities for sale. Reduced production cost

$8.5M and distribution costs $1.1M.

Re-engineered process realizing $4.5M in savings. Operations at the Detroit

News and Detroit Free Press were merged under a Joint Operating Agreement,

and operations were redundant and overlapping. Evaluated all operations and

technology. Redesigned prepress operations. Integrated production.

Merged cultures improving productivity 40%. With Detroit News and Detroit

Free Press Joint Operating Agreement, competing papers were merged, along

with different unions and cultures. Created diverse teams from different

areas, forming quality circles to develop standards and processes.

Managed three printing facilities for division of Hearst Publishing.

Directed timely production of over 375,000 newspapers daily, meeting

deadlines for all departments.. Approved capital budgets. Controlled $90M

. Streamlined operations by combining press runs and realigning sections

of the newspaper, ultimately eliminating press facilities.

. Developed and administered a $90 million budget - $42 million in

operations and $48 million in newsprint.

. Reduced overall production budget by $13.5 million over three years.

. Negotiated contracts with outside printing company and four unions to

outsource production.

. Reduced web( paper) width and page count resulting in a $1.5 million

newsprint savings.

. Managed 356,000 sq. ft. of production and operations facilities,

including 9 presses running an average of 375,000 daily editions and

500,000 Sunday editions.

. Lead 450 employees, including 4 directors, 18 managers and 20

supervisors.

. Responsible for security operations at five locations, including

access control, surveillance equipment and 45 security officers.

. Active member of: the Steering Committee to develop processes and

assurance, color reproduction, production system maintenance and

installation of new technology. Negotiated union contracts. Directed budget

of $4.5M.

$4.5M to $2 M.

. Redesigned and rebuilt production operation, including designing floor

plan and work flow, resulting in a reduction of FTE's
