SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE WAS SPLIT IN TWO AREAS, CAUSING DELAYS,
INTERRUPTIONS, AND INCREASED COSTS. ANALYZED PROCESSES AND DESIGNED FLOW
CHART. COMBINED ALL FUNCTIONS INTO ONE AREA, ARRANGING AN EFFICIENT
WORKFLOW. REDUCED STAFF 30%.
Installed new technology, cutting expenses $500K. Asked by Chronicle CEO to
locate savings opportunities. Reviewed production operations area where
1000 photos per week are color-corrected. Researched/installed technology
to auto-correct simple photos and move more complex photos to next level.
Reduced staff 50%. Improved efficiency.
Consolidated operations, reducing costs. Declining revenue and circulation
at the Chronicle presented opportunity to consolidate all printing
operations. Adjusted printing deadlines. Changed production lineup.
Positioned two distribution facilities for sale. Reduced production cost
$8.5M and distribution costs $1.1M.
Re-engineered process realizing $4.5M in savings. Operations at the Detroit
News and Detroit Free Press were merged under a Joint Operating Agreement,
and operations were redundant and overlapping. Evaluated all operations and
technology. Redesigned prepress operations. Integrated production.
Merged cultures improving productivity 40%. With Detroit News and Detroit
Free Press Joint Operating Agreement, competing papers were merged, along
with different unions and cultures. Created diverse teams from different
