Summarize special job-related skills and qualifications acquired from employment
or other experiences (including U.S. military service) and/or state any
additional information you feel may be helpful in considering your application,
i.e. honors, awards, activities, technology skills or professional development

Throughout college, I supplemented my studies by working full time in a
residential facility assisting mentally and physically disabled individuals. I
feel that this experience is invaluable to my professional growth as an educator
in that I learned many fundamental skills in a hands-on manner and had the
opportunity to practice my knowledge in a constantly changing and intereactive
environment. I was fortunate to later have the opportunity to focus more on
assessment of needs and strengths of individuals while overseeing direct care,
providing me with a wide knowledge base regarding learning and developmental
processes. Additionally, employment as a teacher in various alternative education
environments provided me with experience in the development and implementation
of IEPs, as well as extensive knowledge of behavioral plans as the majority of my
students have required academic as well as emotional support services. Through
this experience I have increased my knowledge of behavioral and mental health
issues common to students as well as techniques to lessen the negative effects on
learning due to such obstacles.

ESSAY
We are interested in your ability to organize and express thoughts on a specific
topic in a succinct manner. Please select one of the following topics and write
an essay in the space provided on this page.
The Most Important Qualities of an Outstanding Educator.
My Philosophy of Student Discipline.
The Importance of Continuing Professional Development and How I Plan to
Incorporate It Throughout My Career.
Essential Elements of Instruction, Administration or Area of Certification.
How Information Technology (i.e., computers, Internet) Can Be Integrated into the
Instructional Process and Curriculum.
My philosophy of student discipline has been developed through a variety of
experiences that have shaped my perspective of the essential components to
creating and managing the classroom environment. I have learned that students
need structure, a basic routine, and consistency to best reduce negative student
behavior and promote a positive learning environment. Students should play an
integral role in establishing the rules by which they agree to abide; I am
always surprised to learn that the consequences they choose for themselves are
often much more harsh than what I felt would be reasonable. When students
understand the expectations of the classroom as well as consequences which are
enforced consistently, it reduces the students' natural curiosity to limit-test
therefore minimizing classroom distractions. I am also a strong proponent for
delegating responsibilities of the classroom to the students as appropriate for
age level and ability. By individualizing tasks, students feel a sense of
importance and strive to do that task well. I believe that high motivational
levels in the classroom also have a direct correlation on student discipline, and
have practiced many ways to promote student motivation. Some have been
successful for me; others have just cost me a lot of money and taught the
students that they only had to do well enough to earn a reward. I have found that
although verbal praise is generally very effective in managing student behavior,
the best motivator is encouraging the students to compete with themselves while
encouraging each other. Group activities are wonderful for encouraging teamwork
and unity in the classroom, increasing student motivation, and often, problem
solving.
In my experiences, these ideas can be successfully implemented into nearly every
classroom to create a positive learning environment, increasing motivation and
positive behaviors, and developing students' self-esteem thus promoting a safe
and risk-free classroom in which all students can learn.
