Responsibilities include re-seeding of Secondary Roads Department construction sites using IRVM
management techniques when feasible. Typical sites include ditch clean-outs, slope regrades, bridge
replacements and large repaving projects. Also includes establishment of cool season exotics when
most appropriate. Identification of remnant roadside prairies for future management practices.
Coordinating and conducting safe and effective roadside prescribed burns. The majority of IRVM
work is performed independently. Establishment of new native seedings on Guthrie County wildlife
areas as well as management of existing areas and native prairie remnants. Assist Weed
Commissioner in spraying of all secondary roads for noxious weeds. Identification of private
landowner noxious weed problems. Requires the safe handling, mixing, and application of
herbicides and extensive record keeping. Duties also include maintenance of Raccoon River Valley
Trail, Guthrie County Historical Museum buildings, planting of wildlife food plots, work in parks
such as road and building maintenance, tree trimming and removal and basic plumbing. Frequent
use of native seed drills, hydooseeder and mulcher, tractors/loaders, rotary and bar mowers, blades
and box blades, dump trucks, chain saws, welders, torches and many other hand and power tools.
Position requires carpentry skills on a regular basis. General mechanical maintenance and repair of
tractors, trucks, trailers, native seed drills, tillage equipment and ATV’s. Tree planting and pruning
experience on walnut plantation. Position also allowed opportunity to assist with DNR aerial winter
deer count and Canada Goose banding. General public and landowner contact on a daily basis.
Assistance with hunter safety classes with presentations and writing of quarterly newspaper articles.
Basic computer skills, broad knowledge of wildlife and plants, conservation practices and laws,
ecology and environmental knowledge. Occasional supervision of community service youth and
part-time roadside assistants.

Responsible for seeding roadside construction sites such as fence lines, slope reshaping, ditch clean-
outs and culvert replacements with native prairie species. Responsible for weed and brush control
during establishment years. Duties also include the identification of native species and offered the
opportunity to utilize extensive knowledge and experience with prairie plants to preserve and
enhance remnant roadside areas, as well as the coordination and conducting of safe roadside
prescribed burns. Position allowed opportunities for program growth, such as landowner
interaction, numerous public presentations and press releases to promote the IRVM program and
successful writing of grants for seed, native drill, wildflower seeder, and seed stripper. Secondary
road duties include snow and brush removal, assisting the county Weed Commissioner in spraying
and mowing all secondary roads, operation of front end loaders, hand and power tools and general
maintenance.

telemetry and aerial location, vegetation sampling of prairie habitat using Robel pole and

significant amount of landowner and general public contact. Use of compasses, topography maps,
surveys, maintaining data logs, computer data entry and maintenance of equipment. Responsible for
training and supervision of new research assistant.
