This course was designed to survey and analyze the alternative
therapies to traditional Western medicine currently available
to patients/ clients in the United States with emphasis on
identifying the impact and compatibility of these non-drug
options with that of FDA approved medications. The areas
covered include the following: evidence-based approaches to
therapy, pharmacognosy, herbal medicine, Ayurvedic medicine,
traditional Chinese medicine, prolotherapy, drug-herb
interactions, nutritional therapy, detoxification therapies,
manipulative therapies, mind-body medicine, magnetic field
therapies, flower essence and aromatherapy, longevity medicine,
precautions and recommendations.
Home Infusion

This rotation was designed to provide an overview of the
numerous infusion therapies, such as antibiotics and pain
management, nutritional products such as tube feedings, for
home use, with easy-to-use infusion pumps and supplies. The
areas covered include the following: total parenteral nutrition
(TPN), enteral nutrition, chemotherapy agents, blood factors,
pain management, hydration therapy, catheter care, patient
clinical monitoring, management of the IV therapy care plan,
counseling patient on IV pumps, tubing, needles and syringes.
Furthermore, I participated in directing an instructional video
for patients on setting pumps and how to fix any problems they
encounter.
Institutional

Emily Do, Pharm D.
The purpose of this rotation was to gain experience in various
aspects of inpatient pharmacy, which include provision of
products to patients and other hospital/clinic departments,
clinical pharmacy services, and pharmacy management. The areas
covered include the following: screening and processing
medication orders, evaluating orders for completeness,
appropriate indication, allergies, drug-drug interaction and
formulary requirements. Preparing and distributing products,
unit dosing, repackaging and non-sterile compounding. The main
project on this rotation had to do with pharmacoeconomics. As
my final presentation, I had to work with pharmaceutical
companies to get the best pricing on the IV solutions for the
hospital, since the contract was ending soon. As a result, the
hospital signed with the pharmaceutical company that I
recommended based on my research and pricing that I was able to
get.

care and independent retail pharmacy with emphasis on Diabetes.
The areas covered include: vaccinations, processing new

Pharmaceutical Industry (Pfizer)

The rotation provided a general knowledge to a variety of areas
within the pharmaceutical industry, which includes sales and
marketing, clinical research, business information, managed
care and/or Medical Information Services. The areas covered
include the following: scientific operations at the regional
level, evaluating new research studies, creating educational
non-branded programs for customers/clinics, sales and
marketing, pharmaceutical product management, sales
support/communication/advertising development, and channels of
distribution. The final project was to survey and analyze data
from a psychiatric clinic and evaluate a potential research
involvement in metabolic syndrome disorders and smoking
cessation.
Ambulatory Care

Angela Jeong, Pharm.D.
This rotation mainly focused on the role of pharmacist in the
outpatient arena and exposure to the pharmacy and therapeutics
committee. A strong emphasis was placed on monitoring and
educating diabetic, hyperlipidemia and Coumadin patients. As an
intern, I was responsible for taking the history of patients,
checking glucose and INR levels, seeing new patients and
recommending medications accordingly. Regular review of patient
INR results, follow-up with patients via phone and changing the
Coumadin dose accordingly was part of the daily job. In
addition, I participated in numerous presentations and
projects, which include: presentation to seniors at Cerritos
senior center on how to use their medications safely, wrote an
article about Maalox misuse/misconception, added the
pharmaceutical therapy portion to a kidney presentation that
was presented to the nurses and doctors, presented a summary of
the OTC treatments to the doctors and participated in the
hyperlipidemia/hyperglycemia research study with Abbott
Pharmaceuticals.

This hospital setting rotation offered a variety of
experiences, including inpatient medical, surgical and
psychiatric services for adults, emergency, ambulatory and
diagnostic services, and inpatient nutritional services. I
gained experience in history, specimens and lab screening,
antimicrobial therapies and dosing, nutrition screening,
charting and writing new orders, developing nutrition care
plans and interacting with patients and health care
professionals. The final presentation included: a review of
the effect of an Acidic-basic pH on lab results and glucose
levels.
