Experience: Bloom n' Gardens: Installation Foreman
[May. 2010-Sept. 2010]
Owner Kate Wright 404-***-****
4011 Greentree Ct. Douglasville, GA 30135
I spent the last five months as the Installation Foreman of a
two man landscape crew. Working under Carl Martin, I expanded
my installation knowledge of walls, hardscapes, irrigation,
drainage, and grading. I got to experience firsthand how design
schematics transfer to the real world. I also improved my
already developing ability to manage people. This was
increasingly difficult with a crew that did not speak English,
but with my basic knowledge of the Spanish language I was able
to develop my crew into a routine that accomplished the many
difficult tasks we had to complete.
My Personal Gardener: Maintenance Foreman [Nov.
2009-May 2010]
Owner Andrew Watson 404-***-****
Davis Ln. Marietta, Ga. 30067
I spent more than six months as a Maintenance Foreman of a two
man crew. Working under Tim Rodriguez, I expanded my
horticultural knowledge, experience with high-end residential
landscape design solutions, and maintenance-oriented design
solutions. I was in charge of a two man crew that was well
established and I led them through the day to day operations
successfully under a strict time budget. Often interacting with
clientele to resolve growing challenges of an ever changing
landscape, I had to be able to think on my toes to offer
immediate resolution while establishing and explaining a long
term remediation process.
Max's Coal Oven Pizza: Pizza Chef [May 2009-
Nov. 2009]
Concentrics Restaurant Group
Marietta St. Atlanta, GA 30307
When I graduated from the University of Georgia, I took a job as
a pizza chef at arguably one of the best pizza restaurants in
the state of Georgia. I was there for over seven months while
looking for work in the landscape industry The staff was very
friendly and super understanding while I found my footing in a
new town.
Ed Castro Landscape: Summer Internship [May
2008-Aug. 2008]
Design Studio Manager Adam Huber 770-***-****
1125 Old Ellis Rd. Roswell, Ga.
Color rendered Ed Castro Landscape's design projects for
presentation to clients. I also scaled hand drawn concepts,
transferred concepts into AutoCAD utilizing the photo analysis,
and dimensions I documented during site takeoffs. Towards the
end of the internship, I assisted the sales staff on job leads.
I helped to pinpoint trouble areas in a client's property,
conceptualized multiple design possibilities, and ultimately
presented finished design drawings. These drawings included both
material possibilities, and specific planting arrangements.
Johnny's Pizza: Pizza Chef
[Oct 2007-May. 2009]
Owner Curtis Winstead
Athens, GA 30605.
Through College I learned how to throw pizza. I was often quick
to pick up shifts when others needed time off, and quickly
established myself as the go to cook for important events. This
enthusiasm led to a key holder position in which I would open
and close the restaurant. My responsibilities included
preparing the kitchen for the rest of the day, and closing the
cash register by balancing the drawer. Sadly this restaurant
went out of business due to a failing economy and an over-
competitive market in the Athens area.
Ippolito's: Busboy, Takeout, Server [August
2001-May. 2005]
Manager Mary Anne Zegers 770-***-****
Alpharetta, Ga 30022
My first job. I started as a busboy, and when I turned sixteen
became a takeout server. Within a year, I was the head of
takeout in charge of training new employees. When I turned
eighteen, I was able to acquire my permit to serve alcohol and
able to serve tables. I quickly learned that the key to success
was personable service with the ability to upsell customers. I
was very successful as a server, and continued in the restaurant
industry at several different restaurants (J. Christopher's, On
The Border, Abbott's Bar& Grill) often simultaneously.
Community: Hands on Athens: Fall 2007- Spring 2009
David Berle, 706-***-****/ Maureen O'Brien, (706) 542-
8972
Hands on Athens is a home and landscape remodeling program for
the third poorest county in the United States. I led a five
person group, comprised primarily of Horticulture majors, to
properly analyze nearly 20 home sites for both design potential,
and cost viability. I then ranked each property personally to
aide in deciding which homes received the gift of a new
landscape. The following semester, I and 15+ volunteers aided
in the installation of a new landscape design on five selected
properties. The next year, I volunteered for a weekend of
rehabilitating the homes not chosen for a new landscape. The
rehabilitation of the remaining homes often included, but was
not limited to pressure washing the home's exterior, painting
the siding, and repairing the asphalt roofing.
Volunteer Teaching: Eastside High School
Whitney Ward 404-***-****
I was invited by Ms. Ward, and Mrs. Bowers to guest speak to
their class of 25+ students about Landscape Architecture as an
art-based career. I spoke to the students about the rigors of
entering college, the joys of finishing a design project, and
the prospect of a flourishing career in an art-based field. At
the end of the "lecture," I showed the students some samples of
designs I had completed in school. I then helped each student
with design problems in their own "Dream Landscape." The
students were eager to learn, and a small group approached me
after class for a more detailed discussion of the Landscape
Architecture Program at the University of Georgia. The visit
was such a success; I was invited back for next year's session.
Northeast Georgia Food Bank: Fall 2004-Spring 2009
The Northeast Georgia Food bank serves a 14 county area with
over 65,000 individuals in need. I have participated in
everything from cleaning the warehouse to meet health code
regulations, to boxing groceries for families in need. Often
sorting food, I relished the days we were there to personally
distribute food to relieved families. I participated at this
venue on and off through my five years of school, and convinced
my younger brother to do the same. He is still active at the
facility.
About Me: Recreationally, I have hiked the Appalachian Trail since the
Spring of 2006. I am also an avid auto enthusiast, and
bicycler. I am constantly maintaining, tuning, and generally
tinkering with both modes of transportation. I got married in
July of 2010, and bought a home with my wife and two dogs in
East Lake, Atlanta.
