BUSINESS PHILOSOPHY
My core motivation, professionally, is customer service; serving with excellence is my
passion. I believe the statement is true, that if you look after the customer, the business will take care
of itself. I believe every person, customer or co-worker, no matter how difficult, deserves to be
treated with respect and positivity.
WORK EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
Beginning with being a server at fifteen years old, I quickly learned to work effectively with
others to provide good customer service. Being a salesman for the last couple of years, I am no
stranger to cold calling and communicating effectively over the phone. My time at Legacy Granite
required me to find new clientele, meet with contractors and customers, estimate jobs, close them,
manage the project, and finally collect on them. In my time there I also took the initiative to create a
multimedia presentation that was used in introducing the company to new customers. Legacy has
required me to learn organizational skills and protocols to ensure my accounts and customers were
properly taken care of. I have found that I enjoy having prowess in the software I am required to use
at work. My co-workers would frequently seek me out with technical questions.
Working as a counselor for EFY, I was directly responsible for 8-12 crazy teenagers for an
entire week. Being a counselor taught me about strict adherence to the highest standards of behavior.
As an example to more than 1000 youth per week, I had to be completely above reproach in my
actions. I was responsible for preparing and teaching multiple lessons and leading discussions.
Teaching so frequently was excellent instruction and practice in using the Socratic Method to engage
the minds of the youth and assist them in learning. Being responsible for free-spirited teens also
afforded many opportunities to discipline. It was at this time I learned conflict resolution skills and
how to deal with broken promises, violated expectations, and bad behavior.
I am able to lead as well as be led. When empowered, I take initiative in getting done what
needs to be done. I can and work well with others, coordinating and/or delegating responsibilities. I
am also able to function independently, working without supervision. I also keep the end in mind and
anticipate upcoming tasks that need to be accomplished.
I am passionate about teaching and presenting effectively. I always approach situations with
the end goal in mind. I carefully scrutinize my content and methods, asking myself “What, so what,
now what,” “Will this work,” “How can I ensure that they learn?” etc. I have been teaching in an
ecumenical capacity for the better part of the last nine years, first as an LDS missionary, and then as
an instructor. I currently function as an executive secretary for the bishop of my ward, organizing his
schedule, receiving phone calls and setting up appointments, as well as carrying out any other duties
he has need of. Overall, my job is to be the grease between the wheels, making sure everything
functions smoothly and ensuring nothing falls through the cracks.
I like to think I have some amount of mechanical aptitude. I have been doing almost all of my
own car repair work since I was sixteen. My automotive experiences have taught me patience, and
troubleshooting skills.
COMMUNICATION
Writing has been an interest of mine for many years now. In addition to English being my
2
area of emphasis in for my degree, I have written extensively for personal enjoyment. For outside
corroboratory evidence of my verbal acumen, I present the following,
In 2009 Deseret News was planning to launch a project known as Times & Reasons which
was targeted at LDS young adults. I was given an audition for the publication and wrote two articles
for it. While the project was not well planned out and eventually cancelled, just weeks before the
launch date, the editor in charge sent this response to my aritcles,
"Your institute instructors were right: You do have a talent for the written word. These how-
to articles were both done well; I'm especially impressed with your revelation piece. It was well
researched and thoughtfully crafted. Your tone was great. Serious but light enough for your 18 to 30
age group...No promises, but we'll likely run one or both of your articles within the first four weeks of
publication."
I have also learned how vital it is to verbally communicate well. Whether it be in personal
or professional interactions, I focus intently on choosing the right words, being assertive but not
aggressive, and ensuring that the message was received clearly. I am able to talk about potentially
upsetting things without getting emotionally involved or sacrificing my objectivity. I am slow to
anger, able to handle criticism with aplomb, and quick to defuse situations where emotions might
compromise a verbal interaction.
PERSONAL
I enjoy trying my hand at photography, drawing, and most especially writing. In my spare
time, I engage in sporadic bouts of hiking, running, body-building, reading, movie critiquing, writing
humorous, informational, political, and/or informative essays, acting, playing the guitar and drums,
writing music, singing, and most recently, developing a comic book. I also enjoy discussing and
learning the principles of ethics, metaphysics, epistemology, and reason. I am currently co-authoring
a book on political philosophy.
