CAREER OBJECTIVES:
My goal is to obtain a customer service that will enable me to use my strong people skills,
educational background, and ability to work well in a team setting to strengthen public outreach
and understanding.
EDUCATION:
College: The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio
Degree: Bachelor of Science in Atmospheric Science
Degree Completed: June 13, 2010
Major GPA: 3.4/4.0
WORK EXPERIENCE:
NWS VOLUNTEER
My time as a volunteer at the Wilmington, Ohio forecast office provided me with valuable insight
into the expectations and requirements of a future employee. My tasks and duties included:
Upper Air:
I worked alongside an intern twice per week learning the process of balloon launches and the
software package that is used for the data collection. Within one month, I was given the
opportunity to prep, launch, and collect data from the balloons without the supervision of the
intern on duty.
Climate, River Monitoring, and Sfc Obs:
Another task I successfully mastered was reviewing the daily climate reports and broadcasting
them over NOAA weather radio. Along with climate I would check river gauges through software
for possible data correction if anomalies were detected. Also, I would take the surface observation
and record it for the office. Lastly, I would take the sky observation and report it.
Outreach:
My summer project focused on preparing a poster of a recent severe weather event to be used for
public outreach purposes. The topic I chose to research was the 2008 windstorm set off by the
remnants of Hurricane Ike. Elements that were included were damage photos from around the
area. Also included were descriptions of damages in each area affected and the explanation that
caused this anomaly. Outreach is a facet I hope to be a part of at any office I am employed
because this plays a pivotal role in public knowledge and understanding of the NWS.
Research Project:
I was asked by an intern at the office to help him work on research that he was conducting. The
study was aimed at better forecasting hail during severe weather using temperature planes
throughout a severe thunderstorm cell. I was tasked with analyzing specific cells within a severe
event, including looking at the reflectivity intensity at certain temperature planes. The hope was
to see a pattern over a large sample group. This gave me a great opportunity to be a part of an
ongoing office research project.
Warning Verification:
On several occasions I was asked to make calls to county warning points after a severe event to
attempt warning verification for the forecasters at the office. This is where my customer service
skills came into play. I was effectively able to hold a brief conversation and take notes from the
people we were collaborating with to verify warnings.
UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SPONSORED PROGRAMS
Student Coordinator
I, along with coworkers, developed an easy way of managing and searching the office’s “I Drive.”
To optimize research proposals and new projects, I collaborated closely with investigators in
answering proposal and project questions.
I handled time sensitive federal grant and contract documents that I was expected to completely
proficiently and efficiently.
WERTZ HARDWARE
Sales Associate
This position dealt extensively with customer service and catering to patrons that came to the
store asking for help. Exceptional service and quality was expected at all times to ensure
customer satisfaction. My duties as a sales associate were:
Evaluate hardware related problems over the phone or in store.
Mix paint and troubleshoot plumbing related issues.
Aid customers in product decisions needed for repairs and home improvement projects.
LEADERSHIP AND RESEARCH:
2008 Windstorm 2008 Present
Researched the existence of gravity wave involvement in the transfer of upper level winds down
to the surface in a stable environment.
Used C++ (i.e. FORTRAN) to analyze upper air data being used with this research.
Analyzed upper air charts looking at inversions and rising/sinking air.
Currently in the process of publishing results and findings in conjunction with Dr. Jay Hobgood.
Ohio State Meteorology Club President 2009 2010
One of the first items I tackled as president was completely redesigning the club website from
the bottom up using Dreamweaver and converting to all web formatting language to html.
I wrote and submitted a proposal to the University requesting funding to purchase and install
all new weather instrumentation and data logging software.
I also wrote and compiled a program to transfer our data to our website.
I have a firm belief that the public needs to be able to access our data. With this in mind we
decided to broadcast our live weather conditions along with historical data via the club website.
This is a first for the OSU Meteorology Club. This speaks to my commitment to customer service
and public outreach.
The biggest task by far was organizing the club’s 14 th Annual Severe Weather Symposium. I
arranged to have speakers from all meteorology backgrounds such as broadcast and hydrology to
come speak at the event. Speakers included Dan McCarthy, Steve Vasiloff, and Mike Bettes. One
of the big hurdles is the club is totally self funded, so I spearheaded an effort to bring in
sponsorship. In doing so, I was able to secure sponsors such as Barnes and Noble, Radio Shack,
and the Department of Geography at Ohio State.
Ohio State Meteorology Club Secretary 2008 2009
My biggest tasks in this role were to take meeting notes and to assist in symposium planning.
I also was in charge of emailing potential speakers for the 13 th Annual Severe Weather
Symposium.
ACTIVITES AND PROFESSIONAL MEMEBERSHIPS:
Ohio State Forecasting Team 2007 Present
I am part of a four person group that writes forecasts for the Ohio State Forecast website,
Twister.
I am able to practice making short term forecasts such as nowcasts.
This gives me the opportunity to practice with models and mos output as well as working with
upper air data and charts to complete my bi weekly forecast.
WX Challenge 2007 2010
Part of the OSU forecasting team that participated in the nationwide forecast challenge.
I won numerous cities, beating out professors and graduate students in our department.
Goal was to forecast wind speed, max and min temps, and precipitation for a city for an eight
day period each. We were penalized for how far off the actual observations for that city.
