KENT OLINGER was born in Huntingburg, Ind., on Nov. 19, 1959. He graduated
from the local Southridge High School in 1978, and from PURDUE UNIVERSITY,
West Lafayette, Ind., in 1982. There, he earned a B.A. degree with majors
in Journalism, Public Relations and Radio/TV Pro-duction. There was much
more to the Purdue years than classes in the morning, classes in the
afternoon and sleep at night.
AT THE TOP of his sophomore year, in August 1979, he began a three-year
tenure as a student assistant in Purdue's Sports Information Of?ce, in
Mackey Arena. They were years that would launch him into all phases of
sports information, writing, interviewing, researching, working on deadline
(Game statistics had to be quick and accurate!) and multi-tasking. He
handled the job duties, about 40 hrs./week, while a full-time student. At
the start of his senior year, he was promoted to Senior Student Intern and
still wrapped up the B.A. degree in four years.
LEARNING AS A WITNESS ON THE WORLD STAGE...
LESS THAN TWO WEEKS after graduating from Purdue, Olinger arrived in
Germany. In July 1982, he took the job of Assistant Editor of "Overseas!"
Magazine, in Heidelberg. A year later, he be-came Editor of the magazine.
By November 1984, he had thoroughly enjoyed more than two years of writing,
editing, coordinating with writers around the world, producing monthly maga-
zines and, literally, seeing the world from America to Germany, from
walking on the Great Wall of China to helping tear down the Berlin Wall (in
1991) in the capital of the reunited Germany.
In 1985, he began three years as a civilian with the U.S. Army, also in
Heidelberg. After three years as a clerk and unofficial Chief of Staff,
when six years overseas came to an end, he had learned a second language -
German - but were the years abroad, in fact, at an end? No.
IN 1990, THE NFL CALLED and asked Olinger to help organize the fledgling
Frankfurt Galaxy,
a member of the NFL's World League of American Football. Olinger accepted
the call for help, and in January 1991 took charge of that team's Office of
Press Relations, Public Relations and Promotions. It was another position
that sent him into writing, photography and extensive problem-solving with
NFL executives, members of the European media and inexperienced members of
the Galaxy's front of?ce, not to mention conducting major mid-week press
conferences and the all-important post-game press conferences with players
and coaches. Olinger was the team's chief contributor to the League's
weekly gameday programs.
Today, Olinger continues with photography and the written word. He was
official photographer, statistician and producer and editor of the Dubois
County (Ind.) Bombers' (college baseball) gameday program "Around the Horn"
during their 2007 and '08 seasons. He created the magazine-style program in
May 2007.
He has many more years to go (he hopes), as he contacts still more
organizations that need
to bring honesty, enthusiasm and experience to your daily activities and
long-range mission.
His writing skills, research, editing, producing, photography and more are
yours for the hiring.
