Bone Marrow Transplant
Unit/Hematology/Oncology
BMT program Est. 1990. Program involves investigative research
protocols, works cooperatively with SWOG and COG. Fully accredited
transplant center with NMDP. Transplants provided: Autologous stem
cell resucue, Allogeneic (related & unrelated), Syngeneic, Attenuated
allogeneic (related & unrelated). Uses a multi-disciplinary team
approach to optimize outcomes and patient satisfaction.
Physician Assistant: Ordering and interpreting appropriate labs,
imaging studies, (ie: X-rays, PFT's, CT scans, MRI, stress tests,
lumbar punctures) in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Monitoring patients pre-, intra- and post- stem-cell transplant.
Consulting with other specialties: dermatology, cardiology,
nephrology, GI, infectious disease, mental health, nutrition.
Determining when to transfer patients from BMT unit to CCU, MICU, SICU
and then maintaining daily follow-up with these patients. Documenting
H&P's, (after head-to-toe physicals), admissions, discharges. Managing
plan of care and medications for patients with multiple
co-morbidities, severely neutropenic patients and
explaining/interpreting lab results to both patients and families.
Performing bone marrow biopsies, skin biopsies, preparing patients for
conscious sedation, obtaining informed consent from patients prior to
stem-cell transplant and invasive procedures. Presenting patients to
