RESUME
COUNSELING EXPERIENCE
Therapist, IPTP Unit-2nd Floor, Hector Garza Residential Treatment Center,
620 E. Afton, San Antonio TX 78232, 210-***-****, January 2009 to
present. Provide therapeutic intervention to adolescent male residents who
qualify for the intensive psychiatric treatment program. Assess, diagnose
and confirm psychiatric diagnoses; provide weekly individual and group
therapy; provide family therapy; work with CPS caseworkers, Juvenile
Probation Department officers, judges and other legal staff and parents to
provide therapeutic care to male teenagers who are admitted to the
treatment center in crisis mode. On-call status requires therapy as needed
for up to 120 adolescents ages 12 to 17. Residents come from a variety of
backgrounds and are wards of Child Protective Services and/or Juvenile
Probation Department. Provide assessment, diagnosis and treatment
(including psychopharmacology in association with residential psychiatrists
and medical doctors) of various mental health issues; also teach new hires
about differential psychological disorders they will encounter while
employed at the treatment center; Certified Trainer in Safe Crisis
Management techniques (physical restraints and non-violent defense
methods); Forensic Psychotherapist.
Director of Counseling Services, San Marcos Baptist Academy, 2801 Ranch

2008. Duties included crisis management; providing individual and group
counseling for students, parents, faculty and staff in a residential
setting; working with at-risk students dealing with all aspects of
behavior, including drug and alcohol counseling; testing and diagnosing of

Texas. February 2002 to December 2003. Duties included the execution of
responsibilities under a TRIO grant program funded through the Department
of Education (DOE) and targeted specifically toward first generation, low-
income and/or students with disabilities (both physical and learning);
monitored academic and personal progress of 220 students, conducted
personal counseling, academic advising, career guidance and study skills
education through the use of learning styles testing; maintained DOE
regulations; filed annual DOE reports; served on various University
committees such as Student Leadership Development Team, Student Affairs
Assessment Team, ADA Committee and Diversity Team. Specialized in working
with learning disabled students.
Director of Counseling, Hill College, Hillsboro, Texas. June 1999 to
February 2002. Duties included providing personal counseling in many areas
including drug and alcohol issues, testing and career guidance to students,
maintaining liaison with high school students, counselors and
administrators, coordinating and instructing freshman orientation, creation
of an orientation handbook, assisting with registration and flexible
enrollment; assisting with the coordination of a faculty advising system
and creation of a faculty advising handbook; developing degree plans and

all county-wide law enforcement. On-scene crisis intervention involving

with the counseling of troubled students. Provided all counseling for
UIL random drug testing positive screens.
General Counseling: worked with individual clients dealing with issues of

Survivors of Sexual Trauma Counselor: Worked with clients in a group

with issues of divorce recovery, depression, anger, grief, parenting, and

self-esteem, perfectionism, obsessive-compulsive behavior, personality
disorders, intimacy and spiritual issues.

"Adolescents: What is Normal?" workshop presented at The Association of
Boarding Schools (TABS) national convention in Washington D.C. on December
1, 2006. This workshop discussed the differences between normal adolescent
behavior and mental illness, including discussions of bipolar disorder,
attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder,
conduct disorder, sociopathology and various personality disorders.
"Study Smarter, Not Harder" workshop presented at the SWASAP Conference in
New Orleans, LA on December 2, 2003. This workshop incorporated the use of
learning styles application to individual student need to help students
study in such a way as to succeed academically.
CONTINUING EDUCATION
I have many hours of continuing education in the following areas:
several seminars on psychopharmacology, working with children with
emotional and behavioral problems, understanding personality disorders,
dialectical behavior therapy, autism spectrum disorders, bipolar disorder,
