• Assisted with research focused on the invasion of the black-legged tick (Ixodes scapularis) and Lyme
disease along the west coast of Michigan and the potential role of small mammals in facilitating that
spread.
• In the summers: live-trapping small mammals and mist-netting birds. Collection of blood, tick and
tissue samples, leg-banding (birds) and ear-tagging (mammals). Use of controlled drugs (Ketamine,
Telazol) to immobilize the larger small mammals. Tick dragging and data entry.
• During the academic year: organization of samples, sample preparation and DNA extraction.
• Significant driving between field sites and establishment of new field sites, maintenance of traps and
other equipment.
• Setting up and managing Band Manager database.
