Experience
University of Virginia Department of Mechanical Engineering
Charlottesville, VA
Research Assistant June, 2008 - August, 2010
. Designed, constructed, and operated a 3-omega method test apparatus
to characterize the thermal conductivity of thin film aerogel as
well as other novel materials. Troubleshot instrumentation and
maintained vacuum systems.
. Collaborated with the Aerogel Research Laboratory to optimize
aerogel for use as thermal insulation in solid state devices.
Improved film insulating properties by reducing aerogel film
conductivity tenfold.
. Designed and operated a PRETTI (Polarized Reflectance measurement
Technique for Thickness and Index) ellipsometry apparatus for the
characterization of aerogel thin films. Wrote software to control
apparatus and analyze data.
. Assisted in the development of work under Office of Naval Research
MURI grant to explore the use of carbon nanotube arrays as a thermal
interface material.
. Publication pending.
Teaching Assistant, Experimental Methods Lab Spring 2010
. Designed and co-taught an experimental methods lab module on
thermoelectric devices emphasizing the process of designing and
conducting an experiment, in addition to the background science of
thermoelectrics.
. Custom wrote entire data acquisition and analysis software.
Programmed instrumentation and debugged experimental procedure.
. Module was added as a permanent addition to the course, scheduled to
run Spring 2011.
Teaching Assistant, Undergraduate Fluids I Fall 2008, Fall 2009
. Performed as lead TA for an undergraduate Mechanical Engineering
class of more than 100 students.
. Drafted and released homework assignments, held office hours,
scheduled and conducted weekly review sessions, and graded homework
and exams.
. Modernized course administration by implementing an online Collab
course site, eliminating need to hire external graders, and
improving instructor-student communication.
University of Virginia Department of Mechanical Engineering (Cont.)
Undergraduate Research Assistant September 2007 - May 2008
. Investigated the effects of roughness at material interfaces on
electron-phonon temperature equilibration.
. Fabricated samples in UVA Microfabrication Laboratory.
. Executed experiments using an optical Transient Thermo-Reflectance
(TTR) technique to characterize electron-phonon coupling.
. Published in conference proceedings of AMSE IMECE 2008 (Boston):
"Effects of Substrate Surface Roughness on Electron-Phonon
Equilibration in Thin Au Films" Authors: Fish; Hopkins; and Norris.
Norfolk Naval Shipyard Portsmouth, VA
Summer Intern June 2006 - August 2006
. Assisted engineering staff assigned to USS Truman (CVN 75) during
dry-dock availability.
. Drafted AutoCAD diagrams, updated safety test procedures, responded
to help tickets issued by shop technicians (mechanics, welders,
riggers), and performed ship-checks.
University of Virginia, ITC Charlottesville, VA
Residential Computing Advisor August 2004 - May 2005
. Provided technical computing assistance to residents in first-year
dormitory.
. Troubleshot basic problems, configured internet/wireless settings,
cleaned malware and viruses off machines, and referred students to
the central computing help desk.
Unrelated Experience
Blue Light Grill Charlottesville, VA
Station Cook June 2007 - August 2007
. Worked at the salad, appetizer, and dessert station.
. Served customers and prepared dishes at the raw bar.
Activities
Intramural Sports August 2004 - May 2010
. Played on and captained teams in soccer, flag football, volleyball,
ultimate frisbee, and innertube water polo.
. Summer 2009 Intramural Soccer Champions.
University of Virginia Cavalier Marching Band August 2004 - January
2008
. Baritone player, founding member in a now 200+ member organization.
. Participated in various alumni ensembles since 2008.
