Job Duties: Transcribing dictated office notes for Dr. Cauthen, a

neurosurgeon, managing transcription-related clerical work, editing nurse's

and doctors notes and dictations.

My position was eliminated in December 2008 in across-the-board cuts by HCA

(Hospital Corporation of America). Dr. Cauthen's office was closed a few

months ago (2010).

Job Duties: Worked from home for this national company transcribing medical

reports dictated by Shands physicians that included specialties such as

orthopaedics, neurosurgery, clinic notes, EEGs, medical oncology, radiation

oncology, internal medicine. The transcription was transmitted to either

the company or the hospital via modem. I eventually after three years

opted to work in an office so that I could accrue sick leave and vacation

discharge summaries, that were then hand-delivered to the hospital. Shands

ended the at-home work and we transcriptions were asked to take in-house

positions. I left in 1995 to go to North Florida Regional Medical Center,

where the possibility existed to work at home after a period of time

working in-house.
