EDUCATION: I recently received my B.A. degree in Philosophy from the

University of Maryland, College Park. I graduated "Magna Cum Laude" with a

cumulative GPA of 3.8. I was pleased to be a "State of Maryland

Distinguished Scholar" and "Banneker/Key Scholarship Award Recipient"

throughout my undergraduate studies. My greatest strengths are

Mathematics, Science, and Writing.

PAID WORK/SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:

--CTY Residential Advisor, Kaneohe, Hawaii, June 27 through August 6 2010

As a past participant of Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talent Youth

(CTY), I was pleased to have the opportunity to work for CTY in support of

residential programs held at Hawaii Pacific University this summer, near my

family's home on the island of O'ahu. As a significantly smaller site than

those for most CTY programs, I had a full schedule seven days a week. My

work involved handling a variety of tasks in the learning environment as

well as in the residence hall. I also helped supervise a large number of

extracurricular activities and academic field trips in the study of

volcanoes and oceanography. I enjoyed working with highly talented middle

& high school students from across the U.S. and other countries.

Compensation included room & board in addition to a stipend received for

each of the two summer programs.

--Federally Employed as an Intern/Biological Science Aid for multiple years

- National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Dental and

Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), Oral and Pharyngeal Cancer Branch, Summers

2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007*

I have enjoyed past internship opportunities as a research assistant with

NIH/NIDCR, pleased to work under the exceptional leadership of Dr. Silvio

Gutkind and an outstanding team of scientists in the Oral and Pharyngeal

Cancer Branch. My work involved:

. Laboratory study of tyrosine-phosphorylated mutants and their effects

upon mechanisms of cell cycle factors.

. Laboratory study of proteins, such as p27Kipl - understood to be

central to the regulation of cell division and an apparent regulator

of cell motility.

. Examination of basic research questions, such as: When a cell

encounters a growth factor (say PDGF), how does it decide to

divide, or to start moving around?

. Support on other research within the Cell Growth Regulation Section as

needed.

Accomplishments: Personally, each of my summer internships gave me the

opportunity to gain clinical application experience through laboratory

research, which was helpful to my Pre-med studies. Additionally, I greatly

benefitted from the guidance of exceptional scientists-mentors at

NIH/NIDCR. *During 2007, I was also fortunate to have an opportunity for a

French language immersion experience over a period of five weeks in France.

LONG STANDING VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE:

I serve as a Tutor every Saturday morning during the academic school year -

The George B. Thomas, Sr. Learning Academy at Springbrook High School -

2000 - Present.

The George B. Thomas, Sr. Learning Academy is an award winning tutorial

program, commonly referred to as Saturday School. I have been dedicated as

a tutor since my youth. I like working with children who

are eager enough to learn that they dedicate personal time

for extra study on Saturday mornings. In recent years, I largely have

worked with high school students in various Math disciplines, French, and

other subjects. My focus and responsibilities are to motivate students to

learn by using a variety of tutoring techniques and to maintain high

expectations of them. "No one rises to low expectations."

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCES:

. National Student Leadership Conferee - Summer 2003

I was honored to participate

in a two-week "National Student Leadership Conference on Medicine and

Health Care" at the University of Maryland, College Park. It involved

small group work and seminars on various clinical, research, and

health care issue. Seminars were sponsored by the NIH and Walter Reed

Army Medical Center.

. Student Scientist - Spring 2003

As a

member of Montgomery Blair's "Math, Science, and Computer Science

Magnet Program," I participated in a field experience to the Marine

Science Consortium on Wallops Island. My involvement in this pre-

college oceanography program gave me an awareness and appreciation of

the marine environment, and served as an integral extension to my

classroom curriculum. I enjoyed this interdisciplinary study of five

ecosystems with emphasis on field observations, data collection, and

data analysis.

. Student Engineer - Summer 2002

I was also fortunate to have been selected to participate in a

residential Science Enrichment Program at the Rensselaer Polytechnic

Institute in Troy N.Y., designed to encourage talented minority

students to focus on careers in the sciences, mathematics, and

technological areas. Work was done in teams through activities in

engineering design, biotechnology, mechanical systems, and computing

and research skills.

SPECIALCOLLEGE HONORS/MEMBERSHIPS:

Received "Banneker/Key Scholarship Award" from the University of

Maryland. This was a full scholarship that covered tuition, room, board,

and textbooks.

Received University of Maryland "Honors Citation" and also recognized as

a "State of Maryland Distinguished Scholar" throughout my college tenure.

> In addition to a full University of Maryland scholarship award, I

received "The George B. Thomas, Sr. Learning Academy Scholarship" awards

for the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 school years, in recognition of my

community involvement as well as my academic success.

> Member of University of Maryland Honors Program.

> Long standing participant in Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talent

Youth and recipient of State honors associated with exemplary testing

results and program participation.
