PROFILE
I am seeking flexible, part-time employment to supplement my current income. I work as a
school counselor for a local high school, serving over five hundred ninth graders and their
parents. My long-term goal is to open a private practice focused on adolescent and family
counseling. Because I work over forty hours per week already and am a single parent, I would
prefer additional work that I can accomplish from home.
EXPERIENCE
SCHOOL COUNSELOR, NEW HANOVER COUNTY SCHOOLS, EUGENE
ASHLEY HI GH SCHOOL, WIL MIN GTON, NC 200 9- PRESENT
As the ninth grade counselor, I oversee the guidance curriculum for over five hundred
students, nearly one-third of the total student population. I create and maintain databases
each year to track previous and current test scores and grades for every student. Last spring
when we began scheduling our students for the 2010-2011 school year, I was responsible for
manually entering the course selections for all our current as well as our rising ninth graders,
totaling over one thousand student schedules. I work closely with our administrators to
schedule each student properly, and I regularly run reports from our record-keeping system,
NCWISE, to assist teachers and other staff. I often create forms and templates for use by staff
and students so that the school may operate more efficiently. My daily work includes individual
and/or group counseling; parent contacts and conferences; program planning; and consultation
with administrators, teachers, and counselors.

In addition to the same daily responsibilities that I perform at Ashley High School, I was
previously also in charge of creating and maintaining the “BucNews”, an e-newsletter I pieced
together about twice a month that I then sent to a listserve which I managed as well. During
my last two years at Laney High School, I created, corrected, and updated the database used
to finalize the graduating class and to generate official diplomas. Each time we received test
results from college admission exams (SAT and ACT), I entered any new scores so they would
appear on student transcripts.

2002-2003
After working as a server for Outback Steakhouse for nearly five years, I was trained to
function as “Admin”, meaning I balanced the previous night’s receipts with the computer
system’s record before submitting the totals to the company’s home office in Florida. Any
discrepancies or errors had to be reconciled before business could continue that evening. Once
the balance was checked and submitted, I was responsible for preparing the server computers
for that night’s shift, entering employee identification numbers and any specific changes to the
menu.

SKILLS
When I first began working as a counselor, the operating system still in use was DOS, and
although I had not used it in many years I was able to learn quickly without formal training.
Within two years, the state moved to a Windows/Internet-based system, and I again very
quickly adapted to the changes. I am overly fond of spreadsheets such as SPSS and Excel,
however I regularly produce work using Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and Publisher as well. I
currently use iWork at home on my iMac to manage my personal finances and various other
documents. Though I am very conscious of detail and always check my work for mistakes, I
often will ask a colleague to look it over for input and to ensure clarity and accuracy.
As a counselor, I am an excellent listener; I am able to assist both adults and students with
problem-solving, conflict resolution, and personal issues. I enjoy and appreciate working with
data because it can help me better understand the human condition and experience, thereby
making me a better counselor.
