WORK EXPERIENCE

June 2009 - Present Investigator, Compliance and Legislation Branch,

State Revenue Office, Victoria, Australia

The Victorian State Revenue Office is an independent service agency which

acts under a framework agreement between the Victorian Treasurer, the

Secretary of the Department of Treasury and Finance and the Commissioner of

State Revenue.

My role as an Investigator within the Compliance and Legislation branch

involves using forensic accounting methods to conduct investigations on

employers to assess their compliance with the Payroll Tax Act. This

involved conducting interviews with employers and external accountants,

analyzing financial and payroll records and interpreting legislation and

case law and drafting reports of my findings.

I have exceeded annual file targets and worked on complex investigations

e.g., payroll taxation of offshore oil rig employees; locum doctors

applying for payroll tax exemption as independent contractors; grouping of

related bodies corporate to prevent taxation avoidance.

September 2008 - December 2008 Legal Officer, Office of the Prosecution,

International Criminal Court

The International Criminal Court (ICC) located in The Hague, Netherlands,

is an independent permanent court that tries persons accused of the most

serious crimes of international concern, namely genocide, crimes against

humanity and war crimes.

My role as a Legal Officer was based in the Central African Republic team

of the Prosecution, assisting the Prosecutor in all aspects of pre-trial

preparation for the trial of Jean-Pierre Bemba for war crimes and crimes

against humanity. I participated in status conferences, drafted pleadings

for presentation to pre-trial chambers, performed in-depth analysis of

evidence pursuant to the Rome Statute, and created dossiers for

presentation to judges pursuant to requirements for evidence disclosure. I

conducted review and classification of documents and evidence using

Ringtail software and linked factual evidence with legal issues using

Casemap software. I was heavily involved in the preparation of witness

statements, the implementation of redactions therewith to comply with

orders of pre-trial chambers, and the drafting of summaries and analysis

charts relating to witness statements. My work was undertaken in both

English and French requiring an excellent grasp of both languages within

the legal framework.

Allens Arthur Robinson is an international law firm specializing in

Commercial Litigation matters, with offices throughout Australia and Asia.

I provided paralegal support in the Construction Litigation department,

assisting in the discovery stage of a $240 Million litigation case,

undertaking subjective review (relevance and legal professional privilege)

of documents relating to the litigation. I completed review of large

volumes of complex materials and adhered to all confidentiality

Leigh Day & Co Solicitors are specialist personal injury solicitors with

one of the largest human rights teams in the UK. Based in London, the firm

has acted for both British and International clients in Human Rights cases

before English High Courts and International courts.

My position as a paralegal in the Complex International Claims department

involved assisting on compensation claims for Iraqi civilians

alleged unlawful assaults and inhuman and degrading treatment by British

soldiers during their detention at Camp Breadbasket, a food aid

distribution centre in Basra, Iraq. I took detailed instructions from

clients regarding the alleged assaults and conducted research regarding the

definition of torture and inhuman and degrading treatment. I Compiled

witness statements and drafted court documents to be lodged in the High

Court of Justice in London. I drafted correspondence to clients and other

parties, assisted with file management, filing and serving documents.

Additionally, I issued preliminary advice to clients, for example, whether

there was benefit in pursuing the claim for compensation.

November 2005 - June 2007 Paralegal (Appeals Unit) and Registration

Office, Review Unit, Q-COMP, Brisbane

Q-COMP oversees the Queensland Workers' Compensation scheme, resolving

disputes through reviewing insurer decisions and managing appeals of review

decisions in the magistrates and district courts of Queensland.

My role as a paralegal involved statutory interpretation of the Queensland

Workers' Compensation and Rehabilitation Act, in particular sections

relating to the definition of workers and contractors. I drafted advice

regarding possible alternative interpretations of legislation, vetted

applications for review against statutory criteria and where applications

did not comply, request further documentation to support the application or

advise client of non-compliance. I conducted administrative law reviews of

applications for workers' compensation, utilizing information supplied in

the application for review form and evidence contained in work cover files,

producing written decisions within the statutory time limit.

I drafted and produced correspondence to key stakeholders, liaising with

parties involved in the review process. I assisted with file management,

administrative duties and team support. Furthermore I assisted in the

preparation of matters set down for trail in the Industrial Magistrates

Court and Industrial Relations Commission, including assistance with call

over preparations.

I prepared briefs for trial, compiling lists of documents, complying with

legislative requirements, serving documents, filing documents in court and

commission.

I was also involved with the completion of the Queensland Workers'

Compensation Industrial Magistrates Court decision database

Magistrates decisions, writing accurate and concise head notes and

inputting data into spreadsheets.

March 2004 - July 2005 Participation Assistant, Bar Practice Course, Law

QUT hosts the Bar Practice Course in conjunction with the Queensland Bar

Association. The Bar Practice Course prepares admitted legal practitioners

My role as a participation assistant involved performing complex legal

media and cultural law. I heavily utilised online legal research tools and
