General Practice (1995 to present), Emphasis on criminal defense (juvenile
and adult), civil litigation (collections - debtor & creditor, foreclosure
defense), family law (pre- and post-judgment), real estate (contract
negotiation through closing), workers compensation and personal injury
litigation. Experience includes jury trials in criminal cases in the
Superior Court and Municipal Court; Representation of juveniles including
trials and defense against waiver motions; trial of domestic violence cases
(prosecution and defense); motion practice including oral argument in
family law and civil cases; arbitration and early settlement panels;
suppression hearings; collection law; contract disputes; DWI defense;
research and draft appellate briefs.
Public Defender, Appellate Section, Pool Attorney (2006 to present). Client
contact, research and write appellate briefs for indigent clients appealing
convictions of criminal cases in the Superior Court, Appellate Division and
prepare Petitions for Certification to the New Jersey Supreme Court with
briefs. Published and unpublished decisions.
Public Defender, Essex & Morris Regions, Pool Attorney (2009 to present).
Representation of indigent clients (juvenile and adult) in criminal cases
in the Superior Court from arrest through plea or trial including client
interviews; legal research; case investigation; motion practice; plea
negotiation; trials - jury and bench. Also was a pool attorney in the
Union Region.
Prosecutor, Town of Dover, New Jersey (1995). Substituted for town
prosecutor and responsible for prosecuting traffic violations, D.W.I.
offenses, disorderly persons offenses (non-indictable crimes) and ordinance
violations.
Adjunct Associate Professor of Business/Criminal Justice, County College of
Morris, Randolph, New Jersey (1994 to present). An instructor of more than
60 full-credit courses in the Criminal Justice and Business Departments.
Courses taught include Criminal Procedure and Evidence; Criminal Law;
Criminology; Business Law; and Introduction to Business. Responsible for
preparing lectures; instructing students; creating a learning atmosphere;
drafting assignments and tests; grading examinations and research paper
assignments; assisting and advising students. Have also taught
undergraduate and graduate courses at Centenary College and William
Paterson University.
Adjunct Professor of Criminal Justice Studies, Essex County College, West
Caldwell Campus (2009 to present). An instructor of full-credit courses in
the Criminal Justice Studies department. Courses taught - Introduction to
Criminal justice and Criminology.
COMMUNITY SERVICE:
Legal advisor, Women's Center at the County College of Morris (1998 to
present). Helped to create, along with director Elaine Muller, a series of
family law seminars and legal clinics. Seminars, which are held bi-annually
at the CCM Student Center, are designed to inform people about their legal
rights and options. Plan events; advise indigent women in the family law
clinic; conduct bi-annual seminars on the divorce process and advise staff.
Legal advisor at the Northwest Regional Women's Center at Centenary College
(1999 to present). Provide free legal assistance to people with family law
and other legal questions.
Jersey Battered Women's Services (JBWS), Volunteer Attorney (2005 to
present). Pro Bono representation of victims of domestic violence in the
prosecution (and defense) of domestic violence complaints in the Superior
Court. Representation includes initial contact, interview, investigation
and trial.
Marrow Power (1996 to present). Created a non-profit organization that
provides information, peer-support and fund-raising for people afflicted
with blood cancers who may require bone marrow transplants to treat their
cancers. Assistance is also provided to their families and loved ones.
Marrow Power organizes marrow donor drives year round to try to find donors
for cancer patients.
