PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
American President Lines (APL) Ltd. Oakland, CA 1988 - Oct 2009
$9 Billion - Global Container Shipping Company with over 10,000 employees.
Responsible for the corporate mainframe application infrastructure of APL.
Maintained and enhanced the complex COBOL, IDMS, SAS, ADSO and Assembler
based application that manages the integration and interactions of
applications implemented in CICS, IDMS-DC, ADSO, IDMS DB, DB2 and Walker
Financials on IBM Z/OS (MVS) mainframe platform.
Designed, developed, tested, implemented and maintained many business
related applications using full SDLC methodology with created/updated
proper user documentations.
Performed Technical project management role on many projects including SAS
software, involved with many off-shore and on-shore teams providing 24 x 7
on-call support and the required user trainings.
Senior Application Developer (2003 - 2009)
. Designed, developed and implemented mainframe Identity management
Security framework projects to streamline the management of user ids
and improve the process audit. The benefits of these projects include
resource savings, improvement of the environment security and
compliance of internal IT audits.
o Designed, developed and implemented mainframe Security database
data analysis and reporting to clean the data discrepancy using
SAS, SAS macro, ODS, Proc SQL, DB2 and JCL resulting quality
security data, access privileges, clear user/group roles and
responsibilities.
o Designed, developed and implemented auto processes for mainframe
ACF2 user id and password management using MQ series, SAS macro,
SAS SQL, Proc report, JES, MVS JCL and CICS COBOL. This included
the ability for the user to update, grant/revoke access as a self-
service function from the web. Achieved quality improvement on
security authentication and authorization, reduction in response
time from days to minutes and reduction on costs previously
incurred by the support/helpdesk to manage these functions.
o Created and implemented data analysis and reporting of very large
mainframe data of online CICS transactions response time details
using Base SAS, SAS macro, SAS ODS, Excel, Email and CICS. This
enabled identifying the problem and helped to improve the
performance by 15% across many applications.
. Developed and implemented automated system to audit user access grants
and cross reference database view/update of user and role based model-
set access as IT audit compliance project using IDMS, COBOL and CICS.
This project provided valuable access grant audit data to IT auditors
and Security team.
. Maintained and enhanced various company's systems, applications,
transactions, programs, maps and etc components automatic cross
reference datasets and reports using CICS, SAS macro, PROC SQL, JES,
COBOL and MVS JCL. These cross references improved visibility of
infrastructure application and improved the performance and quality of
developers while developing business applications.
Application Developer (1998 - 2002)
. Participated in development and implementation of a mainframe adapter
architecture using IBM CICS Gateway and IBM MQ Series to provide
integration of legacy OS/390 based applications with J2EE platform
hosted on AIX (Unix). The project enabled the company to provide many
self-service functionality via APL's award-winning internet site.
. Industrialized the usage of APL's file transfer software CONNECT :
DIRECT (NDM). Created various models, templates and Unix scripts to
provide standardized methods of transferring files between and within
IBM mainframes and RS6000 machines. This benefited many developers to
quickly use the software instead of non-standard FTP.
. Performed a key role in APL's Year 2000 project by providing SAS
software technical support to analyze Y2K compliance and changes. Acted
as the liaison between the Architecture team and the Y2K Team. Provided
guidance and recommendations on techniques for resolving the
application issues
Senior Systems Analyst (1991 - 1997)
. Enhanced report architecture and faxing infrastructure using IDMS,
COBOL and JCL to support increasing usage due to APL merger with NOL
which prevented costly system and database changes.
. Performed technical team lead role in migration/conversion of 6 major
applications from ADS/O and IDMS-DC COBOL to CICS COBOL.
o Enhanced code conversion tool for migrating code from IDMS DC to
CICS.
o Coordinated testing, performance review and implementation
activities of onshore and offshore teams, including CICS systems
and application developers.
. Performed analytical interpretation, manipulation and reporting of
large online CICS transaction processing data using SAS, SAS Graph and
PROC reporting tools to identify problematic high CPU intense
transactions. This analysis was communicated to the Migration project
sponsors, senior management and application team to improve the
performance of converted code acceptable level.
Systems Analyst (1988 - 1990)
. Provided support and enhancement of Eastbound load system, APL's core
business applications and special projects like Dangerous & Hazardous,
BL number expansion and Shipment/BL consolidation, inventory data
online reporting using IDMS, COBOL, SAS, JCL, VSAM, MVS and ISPF.
UNISYS LDD Ltd. Sunnyvale, CA 1986 - 1987
Large Disk Drive manufacturing division - Subsidy of Unisys Corporation.
. Developed and supported reporting and forecasting sub-systems for the
core MRP Manufacturing system.
