Work Experience
CleanPower Technologies / Indiana Research Institute, Columbus, IN. (2010-
present)
New Business Development and Supply Chain Management Leader
. Developed proposals which led to successful bids for ~$2M of new
engine testing business with Cummins
. Crafting a new business opportunity with L-3 Communications a large
partner and Defense contractor to remanufacture their AVDS engine for
upgraded M60 tank foreign military sales.
. Leading efforts to establish basic business processes within
CleanPower such as MRP and quality management systems to achieve
ISO9001 certification and support significant growth.
. Helping to obtain the necessary Indiana Title V air permits to allow
extensive engine testing.
Cummins, Inc. (1991-2010)
Plant Manager, Cummins Midrange Engine Plant in Columbus, IN (2007-2010)
. Responsible for overall operations performance (safety, quality,
delivery, cost) as it relates to the machining and assembly of diesel
engines for the Chrysler heavy-duty pickup truck. A 600K sq ft
showcase facility comprised of 1000 employees producing over 150,000
engines annually totaling more than $1B in sales. One of Cummins' best
examples of high volume (70 sec cycle times), automotive manufacturing
with a high degree of labor and automation integration.
. Continued un-interrupted supply of engines to Chrysler for 30
consecutive months and achieved plant quality levels of less than
500PPM over a volatile demand cycle.
. Led the plant during tumultuous times including the Chrysler
bankruptcy to maintain profitability of the business through the
downturn. Anticipated the drop off in the pickup truck industry and
reduced managed expenses by 40% to right-size the plant.
. Worked closely with central Purchasing and our supply chain to ramp
up/down depending upon the needs over the business cycle. Presented
forecasted demand scenarios to numerous suppliers via face to face and
group communications so inventory turns exceeded plan (30-50 turns
typically demonstrated). As 75% of COGS of our diesel engine is
bought out finished material, this activity is crucial to working
capital management.
. Championed the implementation of Lean Manufacturing with involvement
from all functional direct reporting areas within the plant improving
assembly efficiency by over 20% in the last year alone raising engines
per hour production rates from 28 to 34.
. Introduced new engine model year (MY '07-'10) platforms annually with
Chrysler and Cummins engineering community to meet launch deadlines
and expected quality levels.
. As the Operations representative on the marketing On-highway account
team, I participated in strategic discussions to redefine our global
midrange manufacturing footprint to best respond to likely engine
demand over the next five years and take full advantage of new joint
venture capabilities in China and India.
Plant Manager, Cummins Industrial Center in Seymour, IN (2004-2007)
. Responsible for overseeing production of high horsepower engines for
various industrial applications with annual sales of $250M, employing
275 production workers. A great example of low volume, highly-
proliferated manufacturing.
. Led the ramp up of production of 19L engines from 12 to 20 engines per
day to support worldwide market growth during the economic boom and
brought recon assembly into the plant which comprises 25% of the
product mix.
. Coordinated activities with Cummins India Limited to grow their 19L
assembly and supply chains achieving export capabilities to service
growing markets in their region.
. Participated as a key representative of the company at the bargaining
table in negotiating our last collective agreement with the Diesel
Workers' Union.
General Manager, Cummins Komatsu Engine Company in Seymour, IN. (2003-2004)
. Leader of the manufacturing joint venture between Cummins and Komatsu
producing 30L engines for power generation and construction
applications balancing the needs of both partners. JV consisted of an
assembly line and block machining operation inside the Seymour
facility.
New Products Introduction Manager, Cummins Industrial Center (2000-2003)
. Acted as plant liaison with cross-functional engineering and product
development teams to launch new engine platforms into full production
meeting tighter emissions requirements and entering new markets such
as Marine and Natural Gas.
Materials Flow/ Kaizen Improvement Leader, Cummins Industrial Center (1995-
2000)
. Streamlined internal and supplier material flows to better synchronize
delivery to the plant and our assembly lines through the training and
implementation of Kaizen projects thereby reducing supplier lead times
to less than two weeks and on-hand inventory to less than five days.
Commodity Manager/Purchasing Engineer, Cummins Central Purchasing (1991-
1994)
. Managed global source selection and supplier improvement for all
Cummins engine business sealing components worldwide totaling over
$10M in purchases annually.
Other Applicable Skills/Training

improvement projects at Cummins realigning quality support
organizations and changing our engine paint to a less expensive, more
environmentally-friendly product saving the plant $500K collectively.
. Lean Manufacturing practitioner with over ten years of advanced
manufacturing leadership experience within Cummins in roles focused on
implementation of techniques. Well schooled in 5S, Takt boards,
Schedule attainment, A3s, Kaizen, Standardized Work, Value Stream
mapping and other shop floor tools aimed at eliminating waste and
reducing variation.
. Experienced managing in a unionized environment with all Cummins
Southern Indiana facilities comprised of two separate office (Office
Committee Union) and shop floor (Diesel Workers Union) unions.
Facilitated high-performance work team training for shop floor teams
targeting broader involvement and accountability of all employees for
delivering results.
. Automated assembly environments have provided me the opportunity to
manage various skilled trades support resources such as electricians,
machine repair, HVAC and tool makers to assure equipment and processes
are available and capable when needed.
. Extensive experience with systems certifications in quality (ISO 9001
and TS16949), environment (ISO 14001) and safety (ISO 18001) achieving
