Senior Correctional Officer, GS 7/6

The inmates I supervised encompass all federal security levels, from community thru maximum

custody. I have been trained to recognize signs of discord, tension, and/or abnormal behavior

amongst the inmates. I have been assigned as [OIC] Officer In Charge for most critical posts within

the institutions. Some duties assigned to these areas include: conducting searches of inmate living

areas, verifying institutional counts, monitoring inmates through surveillance cameras, and activity

moves. I've supervised over 40 inmates, assigned to the High Accountability Program. Responsible

for the issuance of emergency equipment, keys, radios, hand/leg restraints, and other equipment

assigned to the Control Center, performing physical inspections of all incoming/outgoing vehicles and

packages, and identifying staff and visitors entering and exiting the institution. I have responded to

emergencies and taken charge of situations until a supervisor arrives on the scene. These

emergencies have included: medical emergencies, inmate on inmate assaults, and inmate on staff

assaults. I have helped to secure these areas, while preserving things such as weapons or any other

evidence for follow up by investigation and report writing. While performing my duties, I have trained

less experienced staff on the dangers and techniques of the varying assignments. I have been a

Member of the Disturbance Control Team at the USP1. As part of that team, I was responsible for

restoring order at the prison in emergency situations and had the opportunity to have hands on

training in chemical agents and handled numerous weapons which include less than lethal weapons.

My duties have enabled me to become knowledgeable in computer software and applications. Part of

my duties were to generate various reports, make changes when needed, and properly distribute

these reports to the appropriate personnel throughout the institution. I was frequently called upon to

translate in Spanish for non English speaking inmates .I have performed all of the above duties to the

best of my ability and with a minimum amount of supervision, while following policy and procedure to

maintain maximum security, which has been reflected in my most recent evaluations. I have worked

closely with a number of Lts. who have prepared me for the challenge to become a GS 8 Officer.

Throughout my career as a Correctional Officer I have had to work closely with a number of Federal,

State, and Local Law Enforcement agencies to transport prisoners using different modes of

transportation to include ground transportation and air lifts. These agencies included U.S. Marshall

Services, U.S. Customs, and State Sheriff Departments. Through my Basic Prisoner Transportation

training, I have been taught what restraints need to be used and how to properly apply those

restraints to ensure officer, prisoner, and public safety while transporting inmates.
