Biological Science Technician
Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Program: Research and develop
PowerPoint presentations pertaining to invasive species. Assist with
watershed group, interagency and departmental trainings. Objectives
are to increase knowledge of invasive species and to develop
personalized field protocols; called HACCP/ISRAP (Hazard Analysis
Critical Control Point/ Invasive Species Risk Assessment Planning)
plans when utilized will help to lessen the spread of invasive
species through field work. Coordinate and present Early Detection
Monitoring for Quagga and Zebra Mussel Trainings funded by CALFED and
CDFG. Assist CDFG with boaters outreach and boat decontamination
protocols for quagga/zebra Mussels. Develop and present peer-reviewed
scientific posters displayed at Scientific Conferences. Conduct
Chinese mitten crab surveys and lead volunteers while in the field.
Assist DFG Environmental Scientist with quagga/zebra mussel and New
Zealand mudsnail surveys throughout DFG Bay/ Delta Region.
Identification of fish, invertebrates and aquatic and terrestrial
plants. Possess the ability to operate dissecting and compound
microscopes, GPS and Trimble units. Grant monitoring for possible
funding sources. Regularly contact other federal and state agencies,
private organizations, watershed groups and the general public to
inform them of our programs upcoming trainings. Inventory and order
outreach material, plan and participate in outreach events.
Delta Juvenile Fish Monitoring Program: Conduct field monitoring
throughout the Bay and Delta for juvenile fish and invertebrate
species. Field work consists of beach seining, mid-water and kodiak
trawls. Identify and document all fish species caught along with
collecting biological data. Water quality data collection with the
aid of a YSI unit. Operate and trailer motorized water vessels during
field studies (Federally Certified MOCC- Motorboat Operator
Certification Course, 6/2010). Lab duties consist of data base entry
using Microsoft Access, quality assurance of all data and coded
wire-tag extraction and tag reading. Plan and participate in
educational salmon festivals.
Assist with the yearly joint efforts of the USFWS and USGS Chinook
salmon acoustic tagging and release efforts at Georgiana Slough,
Isleton, CA: Duties include, acoustic tag monitoring equipment setup
and preparation of acoustic tags. Collection and documentation of
juvenile Chinook salmon biological data. Water quality monitoring and
hourly salmon releases.
Division of Migratory Bird Management, Saskatchewan Canada: Assist
with joint efforts of the USFWS and Canada Wildlife to perform
Federal banding and testing of waterfowl for the highly pathogenic
Avian Influenza (H5N1). Duties include heavy lifting and hiking in
rough terrain while working in inclement weather conditions. Assemble
and disassemble swim in waterfowl baited traps. Capture and gently
restrain waterfowl while banding bird tarsus with a metal Federal
band. Document all new captures and recaptures, determine waterfowl
species, sex and age for the purpose of conducting population
studies.

Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aide:
Fall Mid-Water Trawl Program and Pelagic Organism Decline: San Pablo
Bay upstream to Stockton on the San Joaquin River, Sacramento River:
While on a research vessel assist with the collection and recording
of biological data. Specific duties include, setting and retrieving
fish sampling gear; sorting, identifying, weighing and measuring fish
and identification and measurement of some invertebrate species
caught. Proper use of a SOND unit to measure various water
parameters. Operate and shuttle staff in state vehicles. Laboratory
duties include, use of a dissecting microscope to sort, measure and
identify larval fish. Use of formalin and ethyl alcohol to preserve
biological samples and archive completed samples and lab data sheets.
Identifying zooplankton in fish stomachs. Assist with data quality
assurance and data entry.
Striped Bass Tagging/Steelhead Trout Pit Tagging: Clifton Court
Forebay, Contra Costa County: While on a research vessel sampled
striped bass with the aid of a fishing rod and reel. Striped bass
which are large enough for tagging are processed and released back
into the forebay. Assist with feeding and maintaining healthy
conditions for the purpose of rearing steelhead trout at the Skinner
Fish Facility. Duties also included handling, anesthetizing and
inserting pit tags into suitable steelhead trout. Assist with fish
releases at Old River just about the radial gates leading into the
forebay. Radio Telemetry tracking and monitoring of tagged steelhead
trout within the forebay. Conduct piscivorous bird species
monitoring and documentation of steelheads being preyed on within
Clifton Court Forebay.
Winter-run Chinook Salmon and Delta Smelt Water Diversion Gate
Monitoring Program and Water Quality Assessment: Suisun City, CA:
While on a research vessel monitor and report water diversion gate
measurements at approximately 50 different locations throughout the
waterways in Suisun. Enforce gate closures or allow partial water
flow during specific times of the year. The gates are restricted to
25% open from November 1- ~January 28, and 100% closed from February
21 - March 31, to allow safe migratory passage of Chinook salmon.
From April 1 - May 31 we have a 20% or 35% restriction on intakes for
endangered delta smelt.
Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse (SMHM), (Reithrodonomys raviventris)
Trapping and Radio Telemetry project: Suisun City, CA: Independently
researched and wrote tentative protocol for the endangered SMHM Radio
Telemetry project. Measure and plot trap grids with flags and flag
tape while recording GPS way points. Estimate percentages of
different types of vegetation, while focusing on predominantly
pickleweed (Salicornia virginica). Regularly coordinate field
schedules and work with Department of Water Resources and Suisun
Resource Conservation District while independently performing field
duties. Assemble and bait Sherman small rodent traps with seeds,
walnuts and bedding. Regularly clean, sterilize and make repairs to
rodent traps. Regularly sample rodents caught in Sherman traps.
Handle and restrain SMHM while collecting various measurements.
Perform data entry and compose Excel spreadsheets. Analyze graphs
and report percentages of species recovery per survey site.
Wildlife Management Public Message Line: Answer questions from the
general public regarding nuisance wildlife. Give tips and techniques
on how to cohabitate with wildlife and also how to deter them from
denning near or on homeowner's properties. Interview reporting party
and document potentially dangerous wildlife sightings. Issue
Depredation Permits for nuisance wildlife that are either perceived
as a public safety threat or are causing property damage. Dispatch a
DFG Warden if necessary. Educate the public about hunting and
fishing regulations and give them advice about local Wildlife Areas.
Direct them to the DFG website while guiding them step-by-step
through the site.
Grizzly Island Wildlife Area (GIWA) and Twitchell Island Hunter Check
Station and Wildlife Surveys, Suisun City, CA: Assist hunters in and
out of check-station while selling hunting permits. Identify and
document total number of duck species taken. At GIWA, perform
cloacal swabbing and environmental sampling in order to test for the
highly pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1). Perform tule elk, tule
geese and raptor surveys while documenting species presence,
abundance and documentation of collared individuals. Data entry of
all field data collected.
Pepperweed (Lepidium latifolium) Removal Project: Suisun City,
Grizzly Island Wildlife Area: Assist in spraying herbicide
(Telar-Chlorosulfuron) in order to stop the spreading of invasive
pepperweed. Regularly fill 50 gallon sprayer unit with correct
amounts of water and chemicals. Clean spraying units. Spray
herbicide with a backpack spraying unit also while riding on an ARGO
ATV through the Suisun marsh. Manual removal of invasive weed.
Mourning Dove Bird Banding: Walnut Grove, Ca: Set and bait bird
traps. Regularly independently check traps and band bird's tarsus
with Federal metal bird band. Document all band numbers, recaptures,
sex, age and molting phase. Data entry of all field data collected.
