EXAMPLES OF INFRASTRUCTURE DESIGN AND ONGOING IT MANAGEMENT SKILLS
Retail – Commercial Real Estate - City Square
Senior Technical Project Manager/Architect
Project: Upgrade building infrastructure to support VOIP and other additional IP based technology
for all building clients. City Square is a mixed retail and commercial office space environment
located in Vancouver. The project scope included upgrading their existing infrastructure to
facilitate provisioning VOIP, high speed internet and wireless services to all clients in the building.
Project Deliverables
Ensuring adequate fiber backbone to all areas, ensuring the data centre was upgraded to allow
for the increased requirements of additional equipment and layout the plan to implement the
rollout. Existing core switches and routers were reviewed and updated where required, a data
center with seismic isolation racks was built and new servers were installed to support the
updated services. Equipment from Cisco and Dell were selected and installed in the new data
centre.
This new platform facilitates the building landlord in becoming a full IP service provider to all
clients housed in their building. Wireless, VOIP and high speed internet services can now be
provided as part of the tenant package.
High Technology Manufacturing Company – Aim Safety
Senior Technical Project Manager
Project: Upgrade office and manufacturing infrastructure to support integrated data and voice
communications.
Project Scope: Upgrade Wintel servers, core switches, add VOIP services to the network.
Project Deliverables
In order to streamline operations the existing system was completely overhauled to remove older
dated PBX phone and network technology. Cisco Unified Communications Manager was
implemented over a Cisco switch backbone providing VOIP services to all users. Wintel servers
were updated with new hardware and updated Microsoft operating system and office software.
The new platform facilitated streamlined access to all users regardless of their physical location,
calls and email could be routed to remote offices, cell phones or voice mail as required. This
improved communications environment allowed faster customer response and access to key
engineers and managers on a more timely basis. Overall sales improved 25% with a
corresponding reduction in production lead time.
Mining – Teck Cominco - Trail
Senior Technical Project Manager/Architect:
Project: Migration upgrade to VMware / SAN technology moving from DAS based network. This
system was designed to upgrade and enhance disaster recovery systems and improve
overall network management for the Trail site.
Project Deliverables
Design VMware architecture for SAN and Backup systems, project plans, full risk analysis, risk
management, disaster recovery planning, staffing, resource allocation, budgets and
implementation.
120 DAS Wintel servers supported a 1,500 user base industrial site. VMware migration of all
Wintel servers to an IBM DS4800 SAN provided server consolidation and more efficient
use of disk space with corresponding increase in uptime, reliability and overall efficiency.
Redundant backup with CommVault and Data Domain was implemented with remote site
secondary storage and tape archival facility.
High Technology Manufacturing Company - Cymbolic Sciences International
Senior Technical Architect
Project: Replace Mainframe with Wintel Network
Designed and implemented a Wintel based network connecting together North American,
European and Asian offices in a secure reliable environment. The new system replaced an aging
legacy mainframe system.
Project Deliverables
Infrastructure design, disaster recovery planning, security, wide area links, implementation,
conversion, training, migration and ongoing support. This project was a two year multimillion
dollar engagement involving significant effort in both European and North American offices.
The new system provided real time access to all aspects of the business regardless of physical
location, improving customer response times, streamlining the order process with a net increase
in sales and profits.
Forest Products- West Fraser Timber
Senior Technical Architect
Project: Facilitate connectivity and data exchange between multiple disparate systems
Prior to this project all divisions ran independent disparate systems on several different platforms
with no direct communication to the corporate office.
Project Deliverables
Design a communications network to facilitate better information management and data flow for
West Fraser Timber. Work included budgets, infrastructure design, disaster recovery
assessment and planning, risk management, wide area network links, security, training and
overall project management. This project tied dozens of sites and thousands of users into a
secure, cohesive platform. Other work included workflow improvements, database designs and
corporate wide messaging systems.
The completed system allowed senior executives access to real time information on every
division regardless of physical location or computer platform. Decisions which previously waited
days for relevant data were now able to be made within minutes.
Newsprint Mill – Alberta Newsprint Company
Senior Architect/Project Manager
Project: Design a PC LAN based business computer system for a newsprint mill in northern
Alberta. Prior to this system, all mills had used mid-range or mainframe systems.
Project Deliverables
System design, product selection, implementation, project plan, disaster recovery, risk
management, security, training, project management.
Senior management of the newsprint mill credited the computer system to being a key factor in
this mill becoming one of the lowest cost producing mills in North America. As a 24/7/365
operation system uptime was paramount. The entire mill process was computer controlled and
required multiple levels of redundancy with backup and disaster recovery planning as a key
component of the overall system design.
