ENVIRONMENTAL RESTORATION SPECIALIST

"You get the best environmental results at the lowest cost when you mimic

what's working naturally"

Certified Professional Sediment and Erosion Control Specialist with 20+

years of experience designing and project managing environmentally

significant restoration and rehabilitation initiatives on creeks, rivers,

wetlands, forests and meadows. Brings extensive expertise on the use of

native species and naturally occurring geomorphology to resolve impacts

from construction, drilling, dredging, road building and excavation. Adept

at steering projects through complex regulatory approval processes and

securing buy-in from diverse stakeholder groups, including community

members, environmental groups, and regulatory agencies at the regional,

state and federal level. Exceptional track record for delivering results

that not only exceed expectation from a rehabilitation perspective, but

come in below projected costs.

AREAS OF EXPERTISE

Stream & Wetland Mitigation Strategies . Wetland Delineation . Habitat &

Stream Quality Assessments

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

PRINCIPAL 1993 - Present

Watershed Science, Aromas-CA, Bainbridge-NY

As the founder and head of one of California's most respected environmental

restoration companies, completed more than 100 restoration and

rehabilitation projects on behalf of private clients, government park

agencies, commercial & residential developers, and large land owners.

Key Projects

STREAM RESTORATION & WETLAND CREATION - LUCAS FILM, BIG ROCK CAMPUS (4 Year

Project)

. Initially completed geomorphic restoration of a tributary of Lagunitas

Creek, which included changing the shape of the channel and using

native trees and boulders as bank armoring to arrest bank erosion and

restore proper hydraulic geometry relationships and sediment

transport.

. Subsequently undertook substantial remediation work on a recently-

completed 5 acre pond, whose landscape architect-designed shorelines

neither looked natural nor supported habitat restoration objectives

for the threatened Western Pond Turtle.

ANGORA CREEK RESTORATION - STATE PARKS

. Restored the creek's stable plan form to an alpine meadow that had

been traversed by a sewer line trench without appropriate soil

compaction, resulting in "trench capture" and lowered groundwater

level that harmed the meadow.

. Successfully steered the project through a complex regulatory approval

process that involved getting buy-in from multiple regional and state

agencies.

. Overcame state-level resistance and pioneered turbidity control

techniques using sand dams and meadow grasses as silt filters, an

award-winning solution that has now become standard practice in State

Parks.

WILDER CREEK DAMN REMOVAL & CHANNEL RESTORATION

. Completed a high-profile and at-the-time controversial restoration of

the Wilder Creek, which had been dammed in the late 50's to create a

water supply reservoir for a nearby dairy operation.

o The dam created a 100% barrier to steelhead and coho salmon migration,

but the silted-in reservoir provided habitat for the federally-listed

threatened red-legged frog.

. One year after the restoration, steelhead fry density was higher than

in any other creek in the area, and there was zero impact on the frog

population; project was lauded as a key success story in the Fish &

Game agency's annual report.

Key Projects, continued...

EUCALYPTUS REMOVAL PROJECT - NATIONAL PARKS

. Proposed a new approach to remove invasive eucalyptus trees: the

complete removal of stumps and immediate replacement with appropriate

native species, rather than the aggressive use of herbicides on

stumps.

. Secured approval to test the solution on 4 of 22 acres, and

demonstrated that not only was the approach substantially more

effective from an environmental perspective, but completely eliminated

post-project maintenance costs.

FIELD RESTORATION - ELKHORN SLOUGH & BLOHM RIDGE NATURE CONSERVANCY

. Converted 365 acres of old strawberry fields to native plant

communities, including 10 "special status" plant species.

. Restored proper topsoil levels on a landscape that had been heavily

gullied by poor agricultural practices, to re-create a rare maritime

chaparral community.

MILL CREEK RESTORATION

. Devised a solution to restore the stable longitudinal profile and pool-

riffle sequence of a creek without requiring the removal of a 19th

century stone bridge that was creating a partial salmon and steelhead

barrier.

. Harvested channel gravel from a nearby aggraded reach to fill the

downstream side of the bridge, creating backwater habitat for fish

passage while stabilizing and preserving the historically significant

bridge.

LANDFORM RESTORATION - PRIVATELY-OWNED FOREST IN UPSTATE NEW YORK (Ongoing

Project)

. Re-naturalizing 500 acres of heavily timbered forest, which includes

road removal, restoration of natural drainage patterns, and creating

the ground conditions for natural regeneration without use of imported

seeds or seedlings.

. Restoring banks, bars and riparian vegetation on a perennial stream

that was seriously damaged by the flood of 2006.

Previous experience includes 10+ years as an Erosion Control Specialist,

Resource Ecologist and Hydrologist with California State Parks and the

National Park Service.
