Responsible for standardizing and documenting procedures in
Ironmaking across the Corporation. Helped change, document and
implament new ironmaking procedures in aquired steel companies in USA,
Canada and Central Europe.
Manager of Plate Technology
Responsible for directing Plate Technology Managers and Quality
Engineers to achieve or exceed quality and costs objectives for the
department and the Plate Mill. These responsibilities include the
maintenance of special plate certifications and quality systems
required, physical and chemical testing procedures, internal auditing
and the APEX process.
Manager of Process Technology
Responsible for supervising Quality Engineers, and directing
process improvement projects, non-destructive testing processes and
statistical process control. Successful in applying SPC to heat treat
process and mill gauge control. Initiated sampling plans for UT edge
inspection and plate surface requirements.
Product Metallurgist / Customer Technical Service Plate Products
Responsible for Technical Service to customers in North America of
discrete and hot mill strip plate products. Including carbon steel,
non-magnetic steel alloys, stainless steel, CP titanium and titanium
alloys, nickel and nickel alloys and heat and explosion bonded metals.
Providing customers with technical assistance and claim resolution.
Saved Plate Products Division $340,000 in declined claims during 2001
and $260,000 in 2002. Providing, in addition, quality functions and
steel making expertise for product problem resolution. Leading several
continuous improvement teams for ingot to plate conversion and plate
mill gauge improvement.
NATIONAL MATERIAL COMPANY 1999 - 2000
Senior Corporate Metallurgist
Responsible for managing metallurgy in six sales and processing
locations for the company. This includes steel product application and
customer part review, customer claims and assessing claim
responsibility. Responsibilities extended to supplier quality, vendor
qualification audits and internal audits. Assisting quality manager in
the maintenance of ISO-9000 and the implementation of the QS-9000
quality system.
. Led team approach to satisfy QS-9000 contract review
requirements.
. Worked with plant managers in processing plants to improve
product quality in pickling, slitting and continuous galvanize /
galvanneal.
. Instructed other employees and customers in basic metallurgy,
the metallurgy of part formation and lean manufacturing.
ACME STEEL COMPANY / INTERLAKE, INC 1969 - 1999
Senior Metallurgist - Tubular Products, Steel Technology 1998 - 1999
Responsible for configuring production of Tubular Product Customer
steel orders from melting through shipping. This included establishing
capabilities of new CSP (Compact Strip Production) facility, and
process control parameters for the Hot Strip Mill. Responsibilities
extended to customer complaint evaluation and customer visits.
. Working with new customers and the Sales Department, established
new products from design to implementation at the customers
facility.
. Helped configure and design / develop additions to "SAP" Quality
Module, Acme's overall computer network business system.
. Established quality reporting system within the new computer
business system.
. Designed and implemented an experiment to slit high carbon,
heavy gauge coils.
Manager Process Metallurgy - QS-9000, Quality Assurance 1993 - 1998
Responsible for coordination of QS-9000 certification process. This
included contracting Registrar, establishing timeline to
certification, training of production department representatives,
Quality Manual writing and document control.
. Designed and implemented new document control system.
. Conducted training in SPC, Control Plans, FMEA's and Work
Instruction writing.
. Initiated and managed a vendor qualification system which
included approval and corrective action.
. Updated and automated the "Cost of Quality" system.
Quality Assurance Metallurgist 1984 - 1993
Assisted in writing Acme's quality manual, updating and maintaining
Standard Operating Procedures and establishing and maintaining a "Cost
of Quality" program. This also included supervision of Metallurgical
Observers in the Primary Rolling Mills and BOF Shop.
. Installed and configured a BOF Shop quality reporting system and
furnace charge calculation. Trained operators and tuned charge
calculation. Reduced reblows and improved turndowns.
. Designed, programmed and installed a Primary Rolling Mill
computer operating system. The system included heating, rolling,
shearing and included quality data recording and reporting. Trained
operators and maintained system. Increased bloom yield by two
percent - $225,000 / month
. Established a vendor quality system for BOF Shop and Primary
Rolling Mills.
. Using "Cost of Quality" system reduced inplant rejects and
repair by 2.5%.
Process Metallurgist, Rolling Mills / BOF 1977 - 1984
Responsible for the processes in the several areas of the steel mill
on an area rotating schedule with other metallurgists.
