Veterinary Assistant

• Assist the veterinary technician and/or veterinarian in any way possible.

• Maintain cleanliness in the clinic. This includes, but is not limited to: cleaning

cages, dishes, and bedding; cleaning examination areas and surgery suites;

cleaning windows and walls; sweeping and mopping; properly sanitizing medical

instruments; and doing laundry.

• Feed the animals who are in the clinic, providing special diets when necessary.

• Administer medications (oral and injectible) as directed.

• Monitor the health and condition of patients pre and post-surgery. Identifying any

concerns and reporting them to the veterinarian/technician immediately.

• Provide treatments for animals including: vaccinations, nail trims, bandaging, ear

cleaning, expression of anal glands, etc.

• Assist with euthanasia procedures.

• Prepare animals for surgery. Assist the veterinarian in surgery procedures as

needed.

• Assist with drawing blood samples and performing chemical analysis on samples.

• Perform routine laboratory tests such as parvovirus tests, occult heartworm tests,

and analysis of fecal samples.

• Perform radiographs at the discretion of the veterinarian.

• Assist in admitting and releasing animals in a timely and courteous manner.

Providing pertinent medical information on the at-home care of the patient.

• Assist in maintaining patient records by accurately recording the treatments and

procedures administered and recording the use of controlled drugs.

• Assist in maintaining the inventory of medications and supplies used in the clinic.

• Assist in answering phone calls, providing general information on animal care to

the public, and making patient appointments.
