APGENCO/APTRANSCO April

2003 - Aug 2008

DCS/Instrumentation & Controls Engineer

Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation Ltd (APGENCO) is the

electricity generation company of the Government of Andhra Pradesh state in

India. It has an installed capacity of 7048.4 MW which makes it the third

largest power generation company in India.

Andhra Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation Ltd (APTRANSCO), a subsidiary

of APGENCO is the Power Transmission company of the Government of Andhra

Pradesh state in India.

Worked as a DCS/Instrumentation & Controls Engineer in APGENCO.

Nature of duties:

. Maintenance of C & I System in 2 * 120 MW Thermal Power Stations.

Troubleshooting and fixing of malfunctioning instrumentation and

related software.

. Engineering and implementation of C & I System in Thermal power

station during Refurbishment of the project.

. Annual & Break down maintenance of Power station.

. Placing the indents and studying of quotations submitted by supplier

for technical suitability as part of spares maintenance.

. Analyzing the causes of tripping and preparation of tripping report

. Understanding the P & ID drawings, fundamentals of analog electrical

circuits and control theory.

. Designing of embedded software, electrical circuits and testing.

. Testing the various types like mechanical, electronic and electrical

equipment, devices to give suitability after procurement.

Installation, testing and commissioning works carried:

. Steam and water analysis systems

. PROCONTROL *P13/42 of ABB during the up rating of units from 110MW to

120MW

. 24V, 2000AH Battery chargers.

. 200AH ups system.

Details of hands on Experience:

. Calibration of Field equipments like (a) Transmitter (b) Control

Valves etc.

. Commissioning and maintenance of electrical and pneumatic operated

control valves & power cylinders.

. Maintenance of C&I Lab

. Analysis of the causes of trips

. Hands on experience on Flue gas, Steam and Water Analysis system.

. During engineering stage, involved in preparing and finalization of

closed loops, open loops, I/O list, Alarm list, BTG desk, Field

devices, drive list etc.

. Preparation of cable schedules etc.

. Tuning and Maintenance of closed loop controls in Auto mode.

. Experience in planning, executing and leading software engineering

projects using the latest software development best practices.

SYSTEMS Handled

. PROCONTROL P 13/42 of ABB

. PC POSE (MMI system from M/s. BHEL)

Works handled in PROCONTROL DCS SYSTEM:

. Implemented alarm system for annunciation of supply problem in CRA

panel through supply Monitoring module.

. Implemented on-line logic modifications in various control loops.

. When the failure of pneumatic based Secondary Air Damper Control

System has led to 10 nos of 120MW unit trips after refurbishment work,

Worked out a scheme for SADC system in the "PROCONTROL DDC",

implemented the scheme part by part when the unit is in service and

finally taken in to DCS System. These effort-avoided units tripping

which not only saved loss of generation costs but also saved new

equipment procurement costs and also lead time for the same. This

effort saved around several crores.

. Worked out and implemented three element controls for hotwell level

control to handle a different type of control valve.

After refurbishment works of 120MW unit, noticed that the reason

for the problem is the characteristic of the valve and

proposed to use a 3 element Control comprising Howell level,

condensate flow and steam flow. With the Implementation of the above

the loop settled and it could accept a wide band of gain and time

constants as it is having a feed forward element.

Project: Power Plant Simulator Software for APGENCO

Environment: C, C++, Visual Basic.NET

Developed Power Plant Simulator Software for APGENCO using Visual Basic.NET

and C++. Demonstration of the Simulator was given at Multiple Power

Stations of APGENCO to more than 150 engineers and received wide

appreciation. After successful feedback from all engineers, APGENCO stopped

the processes of purchasing a Simulator from external agency which costs

several crores ($400,000) which was intended for the training of newly

recruited engineers. The Simulator was mainly built to train the new

engineers in Power Plant Operations & Maintenance.

Features:

. Plant can be simulated to run right from charging of station bus

including flashing, rolling and synchronizing operations.

. It runs on a Server and several Client systems and in second phase, it

was implemented on multiple client systems.

. In the first phase, File system was used to establish communication

between server and clients and in second phase Winsock is made use of.

. Many ActiveX controls were developed as a part of Simulator

development.

. Mathematical models of various Boiler parts (Thermodynamics), Feed

Water Heaters, Condenser, Turbine governing system. Cooling Towers

(Simple models) were developed.

. XY trends in real time were developed without using any readily

available tool.

. The facility to store any particular plant condition with user defined

names and to reload them was provided.

. Auto control loop tuning parameters were made available to the

operator to demonstrate the effect of gain and time constant.

. Effect of humidity and ambient temperature on the operation of the

power plant can be demonstrated. The above are only a few of the

available features.

Achievements:

. Selected as a member by APGENCO Directors for the project of POWER

PLANT SIMULATOR for 210 MW, being developed in Visual Basic.

. Demonstration of the simulator was given at multiple power stations of

APGENCO to more than 150 engineers and received wide appreciation.

Training

. 6 Month Induction training program on Power plant operation and

maintenance at VTPS/TI, Vijayawada Thermal Power Station India.

. Trained on SCADA system at VTPS/TI, Vijayawada Thermal Power Station

India.

. Trained on optimization of power plant operations at Hyderabad, India.
