Philosophy of Teaching Statement
Teaching and learning are essential energy forces that sustain the world.
The exchange between the two builds, expands, and formulates a learning
community. Higher education focuses the demands for a meaningful and
engaging learning environment to develop learners and sharpen their skills.
Such an environment creates the co-construction of knowledge, which thrives
off of multiple perspectives and the respect for the varying views. It also
challenges the practicality of knowledge, strengthens values, as well as
establishes the belief systems of the teacher and learner, which are ever
evolving. While higher education is primarily about developing skills and
a reservoir of knowledge in a particular discipline, it is equally as
important to expose and develop the collaboration between disciplines.
Collaboration is fundamental in the workforce. No entity functions
completely independent of others. As a teacher it is paramount that I
serve as a co-learner, coach and mediator to accompany students through
such an empowering journey that assist them in connecting their discipline
to the world.
In the field of Human Services single right answers rarely exist for all
situations. This profession needs people who can think and are willing to
collaborate across disciplines in order to address the demanding needs of
our society. I am a proponent of the foundation and security that
traditional ideologies provide, but progressive enough to explore new
ideologies for the advancement of serving people. As a teacher, openness
and flexibility should be imparted to learners in order to cultivate the
continued exchange of knowledge from generation to generation.
In the classroom or on a webcast I would promote activities such as program
development to nurture critical thinking skills and demand ideas for
problem-solving. These projects make course concepts relevant to a
student's chosen career path and allow them to take ownership in their
learning. Another tool for teaching would include having students defend
a position on a topic to synthesize the information presented in lecture
and research. This promotes critical thinking and builds creativity. I
would also like to partner with the community to allow students to test
their ideas in real world settings. The interaction between minds is a
powerful and rewarding experience.
My services as a professor allow me to make a substantial contribution to
the needs of people by training individuals who want to serve our
community. The academic curriculum that I have been exposed to has
heightened my awareness of the needs of diverse cultures and challenged the
practicality of the services the profession provides. Workshops and
conferences have been beneficial in building my reservoir of knowledge and
skills in counseling. My affiliation with the American Counseling
Association serves as an enrichment tool for keeping me abreast of all the
latest news and updates in my profession. As a future professor I will use
previous job experience to enrich curriculum for adult learners while
continuing to expand my professional skill set.
