PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Vice President of Operations, ARRAY TECHNOLOGIES, Albuquerque, NM, 2010-
2011
Led the development of business systems and processes linking Engineering,
Supply Chain, Quality Assurance, and Production; the selection of, and
implementation preparation for a new Enterprise Resource Planning solution
(starting from Product Data Management and Document Control, Master
Production Schedule, Inventory Control, Material Requirements Planning,
Shop Floor Control, and Sales and Cost Accounting functions); and the
general management of IT. Involved in most aspects and functions of the
company - e.g. contract review and project management; development of
second sourcing; recruiting and selecting new hires; strategy adviser to
the ownership.
Director of Programs, EMCORE CORPORATION, Albuquerque, NM, 2006-2009
Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) Project Planning,
Management and Solar Engineering
Led engineering development for a target project size of 10 MW deploying
High-Concentration Photo-Voltaic (HCPV) systems: assessment of energy
production; adaptation of HCPV tracker foundations to geo-technical
conditions; site layout; power distribution architecture and Balance Of
System (BOS) requirements; instrumentation, control network, security, and
web-based supervisory systems. Developed EPC schedule, costs and resource
planning.
Led bids preparation for projects up to 60 MW of power in North America:
establishment of EPC and Operation & Maintenance (O&M) legal, insurance,
and financial terms; review of geo-technical and interconnection
requirements; selection of subcontractors, suppliers and partners; analysis
of PV technologies and tracking methods for deployment; estimation of
energy production, EPC costs, and Levelized Cost Of Energy (LCOE).
Worked with global law firm and developers' lawyers for EPC contract
development and legal due-diligence. Provided direct support to Spanish
developer during project finance negotiations with German bank and directly
interfaced with bank adviser during technical due-diligence. Negotiated and
signed 2 EPC contracts for the construction of 2 solar farms in Spain for a
total power of 1.4 MW deploying both fixed-tilt PV and HCPV.
Field Operations and Operation & Maintenance (O&M)
Co-developed internal capabilities and external network of sub-contractors,
and consultants for the construction, installation, interconnection, start-
up, and O&M of solar farms. Defined specifications and selected vendors for
all BOS and managed timely delivering to site. Defined procedures for
mechanical inspection, grounding and performance measurements of HCPV
systems, monitoring of energy production and availability, and logging and
reporting of events and activities. Interfaced with bank technical advisers
and research institutes during acceptance testing.
High-Concentration Photo-Voltaic (HCPV) Product Development
Managed and supported 2 product development cycles (specifications,
prototyping, testing, and engineering) for high-volume production of HCPV
systems applicable to utility-scale solar projects. Conducted comparative
analysis of HCPV vs. flat plate on a LCOE basis, and established cost
target for the HCPV system, and potential margins vs. deployment latitude
and solar resources. Total investment above $40M.
Partner, TUTTLE COMMUNICATIONS - Medical and Life Sciences Consulting,
Berkeley, CA, 2005-2006
Supported family business start-up in administrative, commercial and
technology areas.
Various positions, THERMO ELECTRON, Milan, Italy and San Diego, CA, 1995-
2004
Engineering and Technical Services Management
Held P&L responsibility for international service business applied to the
process / heavy industries (cement manufacturing, coal and mineral
processing, steel and scrap steel processing) and covering the total cost
of ownership / full life-cycle of products. Increased contract-based
revenues by 23% in 2 years. Optimized booking-to-revenue process achieving
a 28% revenue growth. Ensured satisfaction of customer base (~ 100 sites,
1/3 under contract-based services). Traveled globally to meet with key
accounts and turned-around business sentiment of major account (over $1M of
annual revenues). Led and completed restructuring program for service
products - definition of service deliverables over multiple levels,
marketing communications, value-based pricing model - increasing products
visibility and value (revenues per agreement ~ $25-2,500k).
Led 10 project engineers operating from various locations worldwide.
Designed and introduced performance metrics - i.e., time management, direct
labor utilization, on-time delivery, on-site response time and ageing
calls. Introduced performance-based compensation and innovative sales
commission terms. Coordinated internal training programs and organized
specialist's and user's group conferences. Managed worldwide regional
reorganization.
Modeled service business processes (pre-UML use case diagramming) - initial
schematization of business activities, identification of business actors,
associations, internal and external transaction identifiers, and ownership
of actions and tasks. Developed a CRM model for the business unit - as
member of selected team, including business unit president and external
consultant.
Project Management
Held Profit & Loss (P&L) responsibility for projects deployed world-wide in
the process / heavy industries. Led high-visibility projects inclusive of
advanced technologies through detailed understanding of associated risks.
Highly successful at negotiating customer requirements and change orders by
finding common ground to different points of view and interests. Recovered
compromised projects and eliminated legacy issues winning back customer's
loyalty. Knowledgeable on international commercial practices and import-
export regulation of hazardous materials.
Systems Engineering
Worked as senior engineer for process control projects deploying the
revolutionary Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analyzer (PGNAA) and its
highly complex process control software. Traveled extensively in Europe,
USA, Africa, Middle East and Asia for commissioning and performance
evaluation of systems. Engineered custom factory integration of the control
