Research Assistant Professor, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC

Sep. 2009 - present

Postdoc research associate, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill,

NC Sep. 2008 - Aug. 2009

. Developing new imaging techniques and image processing techniques

for fluorescence-based biosensors.

. Combining fluorescence fluctuation spectroscopy with fluorescence-

based biosensors for cell signaling studies, enabling observation

of multiple protein activities at once.

. In charge of laboratory imaging systems (TIRF, confocal, two-

photon, lasers, optical components, detectors and data acquisition

interface), training users and collaboration.

Scientist & Biophysicist, BioWarn, LLC, Pittsboro, NC

Oct. 2007 - Aug. 2008

Start-up biotech company developing semiconductor-based

biosensors

. Developed models to understand the mechanism of semiconductor

biosensors and used the model to design and optimize sensor

experiment procedures.

. Conducted biosensor experiments for government funded contract.

. Developed data analysis method and analyzed experimental data

using Igor and Matlab.

. Chosen to be one of the 7 core science team members to finish

existing contracts and obtain new contracts when the company

downsized from > 30.(company closed in 2008)

Research Assistant, Emory University, Atlanta, GA

June 2003 - Oct. 2007

Advisor: Professor Keith Berland

. Utilized two-photon fluorescence imaging and spectroscopy

techniques to study protein dynamics and interactions in living

cells.

. First theoretical research on optical excitation saturation

effects in fluorescence spectroscopy measurements. First to

demonstrate that the commonly used approach to avoid such

artifacts is not sufficient. Developed a practical method to

remove related artifacts.

. Used computation to examine and evaluate various optical

configurations and how the configurations influence spectroscopy

experimental results.

. Theoretically revised anomalous diffusion model used in

fluorescence spectroscopy measurements and clarified confusions

from the current models in the field.

. Single-handedly initiated and developed cell culture &

manipulation in the lab.

Summer Research Assistant, Emory University, Atlanta, GA

June 2000 - Sep. 2000

Advisor: Professor Keith Berland

. LabView programming for automatic data acquisition control on the

imaging system

Research Assistant, Xiamen University, China

Sep. 1997 - May. 1999

Advisor: Professor Wen-xuan Lv

. Measured the water content of nonconducting materials (oil and

paper) and the resistivity of semiconductors with microwave

perturbation outside the resonance cavity.
