maker.
WORK EXPERIENCE
01/2007 - Olin Chemical
PRESENT Process Engineer/Production Supervisor - Augusta, Georgia
Designed, tested and installed new effluent treatment system that allows
continuous flow of waste water to be treated through carbon beds for
continuous mercury removal with interlocks to ensure mercury discharged did
not exceed waste water permit limit. Wrote operating procedures and
trained operators to ensure that the system performs optimally and as
designed. 2007 total mercury discharged to the river was 13.1 lbs. After
the effluent project was completed, the total mercury discharged to the
river for 2008 was reduced by half (approximately 8.6 lbs), and mercury
released for 2009 is 4.5 lbs.
Designed, tested and installed new controls on the effluent composite
sampler. The new controls allow easier troubleshooting and efficient
alarms when the system is not operating optimally. The new configuration
ensures that a consistent sample is taken to be analyzed for the NPDES
permit to ensure permit compliance.
Developed an SPC chart for the secondary treatment operators that provide
the parameters for releasing secondary treatment batches to the river at
the lowest mercury concentration possible.
Designed, tested and install pH adjustment systems on both plant water
wells. Worked closely with the project manager, vendors, and contractors
to ensure that the project was completed on time and on budget. Wrote
operating procedures and trained operators to ensure that the system
performs optimally for plant well water usage and for feed to the RO water
system.
Supervised area operators in the chlorine compression area and waste
treatment/utilities area. Provided feedback and process troubleshooting as
required. Utilizing the relief operators, I reduced overtime by 10% to
reduce costs and I managed maintenance activities to reduce call ins and
excess expense spending in my areas by 10% of budget.
Managed SPC charts for the bleach and HCl processes to ensure they are
running optimally and in control to produce quality product for shipment.
Utilized these charts for both processes to diagnose equipment problems and
schedule downtime for maintenance so that bleach production losses are less
than 1.0% capacity and HCl production losses are less than 3.0% capacity.
Performed production closing at the end of every month to ensure that
production balanced each month with respect to product made and product
shipped.
Site champion for behavior based safety observation program. Lead
production employees, maintenance employees, and contractors in the program
to ensure selected safety behaviors evolved to safe habit strength.
Currently have sent over 100 behaviors to safe habit strength since January
2010.
Reduced sulfuric acid consumption from 25 dry tons per month to 18 dry tons
per month utilizing statistical experimentation for a raw material savings
of $20,000 per year.
07/2006 - Olin Chemical
12/2006 Project Engineer - Augusta, Georgia
Designed, tested, installed, commissioned, and put into operation a reverse
osmosis system to provide high purity water to the Bleach, Caustic and HCl
systems.
Completed insulation and painting of the CP Salt tank and structural steel
per project manager design. Worked closely with vendors and contractors to
ensure that the scope of the work was completed on time and on budget.
Assisted the project leader on the completion of the Augusta Plant Bleach
Expansion Project.
01/2004 - The Shepherd Chemical Company
08/2005 Co-Op Engineer - Cincinnati, OH
Tested, troubleshot, and put into service a pastille bagging system.
Worked various shifts to optimize system operation and made changes to the
system that allowed for easier, more efficient operation.
Designed, tested, and installed a turbidity testing system on the waste
water stream of a microfilter system, including the piping layout design.
Worked closely with contractors and made changes necessary to ensure
operability upon completion.
Operated a pilot spray dryer to produce experimental products for use in
Research and Development. Collected data from experimental runs to be used
in future production scale batches.
Installed a pilot squeeze press in the Pilot Plant, including piping layout
design. Worked closely with contractors and made necessary changes to
ensure operability upon completion.
Tested and troubleshot a pilot multi-tray revolving dryer as an alternative
to using dry rooms for the dewatering of products. Collected data from
experimental runs to be used in future scale up of the dewatering system.
Operated, troubleshot, and maintained reverse osmosis systems used to
produce plant RO water. Collected production data and compared it to
optimal data from literature to assist in troubleshooting. Tested
different sensors (pH, ORP, conductivity) to ensure proper operation.
Wrote operating manuals, troubleshooting guidelines, and clean in place
procedures for all RO units.
05/2002 - The Scotts Company
12/2002 Pilot Plant Specialist - Marysville, OH
Worked in the Pilot Plant to help with product runs, controlling the system
for effectiveness to ensure that all runs went smoothly. Collected data
from experimental runs to be used in future production scale batches.
Designed and installed a new urea formaldehyde concentrate system for the
Pilot Plant. Installation included tank sizing, piping layout, and sensor
installation. Worked closely with contractors throughout installation and
made necessary changes to ensure operability upon installation.
Assisted in Research and Development Lab as needed.
