Professional Experience

NewHope PsycHab, L.L.P.(NHPH). Co-Founder and managing partner of NHPH.

Arkansas provider of emergency and crises intervention and respite services

for persons with dual diagnosis (MR/DD and mental illness). 2001 began

obtaining specific small grants reporting service results. NHPH expanded

its mission to provide services as a last resort, regardless of disability.

Clients have ranged from 11- year- old male with social disability (father

incarcerated) to provision of a chemical free home for 2 - 4 males needing

long-term support, recovering from meth-amphetamine use. Until 2010 was

responsible for day-to-day management of 3 to 12 staff, and the majority

of grant writing / fund raising activities. Due to need to continue income

NHPH has worked in the private sector using internet knowledge to locate

individuals seeking health insurance options for private agencies. During

this time I obtained my Certified E-Commerce Consultant credential (CEC).

University of Arkansas Fayetteville, Research Assistant, Department of

Rehabilitation Education and Research, University of Arkansas,

Fayetteville). Responsibilities and experiences: manage, conduct and

facilitate on-going research projects with the faculty/staff of the

Arkansas Rehabilitation Research and Training Center, including project

design, instrument development and psychometric evaluation, data gathering,

data base management, statistical analysis (prefer SAS), research report

(refereed journal) writing; develop, obtain required funding for and

conduct own original research projects; coordination and supervision of

graduate student practicum; provide weekly research design and statistics

tutoring classes for Masters program Rehabilitation Counseling students.

University of Arkansas Fayetteville, Teaching Assistant, Department of

United Underwriters Agency, Little Rock, AR. & Traverse City, MI.. Owner,

manager, recruiter, trainer of life and heath insurance agency with 150+

brokers, 15 - 30 captive agents, and 7 - 10 agency operations staff.

Produced $12+ million API. Started 8/86, sold 5/90.

Bought and sold as Sole Proprietor and manager several small businesses as

development partner in a "strip mall" off of Chenal Parkway ; 2 - 6

employees. Bought 4/89, relocated, upgraded and sold at 250% profit, 4/90.

Economizer, Inc., Little Rock, AR. Vice President then President, small,

closely held investment holding company. Real estate development and small

to mid-size business acquisitions, renovations and liquidations. Included

opportunity to be sole proprietor and manager of a business with 2 - 6

employees. Bought 4/89, relocated, upgraded and sold at 250% profit, 4/90.

Co-founded Economizer 3/81, sold 3/92.

Paramount Life Ins. Co., Little Rock, AR. Started as agent, ended as

Assistant Agency Director. As assistant agency director, was immediate

manager of 6 general agents / state managers (1 Arkansas, 1 Oklahoma, 1

Mississippi, 1 Louisiana, 2 Alabama), managing a sales force of over 150

full-time career agents as well as 200+ independent brokers spread over a 5

state territory. Started 9/73, company was sold in 8/86.

Research Project Management Experience

Twenty-Year Longitudinal Follow-up of Former Arkansas Rehabilitation

Services Spinal Cord Injured Clients. The purpose of this 5 - year study

was to conceptualize and measure key facets of Quality of Life (QOL) as

reported by Arkansas Spinal Cord Commission (ASCC) clients with spinal cord

injuries (SCI), twenty-five years after clients' first contact with

Arkansas Rehabilitation Services (ARS), and consequent participation in

earlier Arkansas Rehabilitation Research and Training Center (ARRTC)

studies (Cook, 1978). This was accomplished by: developing an instrument,

the Rehabilitation QOL Inventory (RQOLI), measuring six facets of QOL

relevant to rehabilitation (rehabilitation QOL); cross referencing files

from the original ARRTC study with Arkansas Spinal Cord Commission (ASCC)

(branch of ARS specifically serving clients with SCI) data bases to

determine surviving ARS clients with SCI, and obtaining current addresses

for those clients; mailing the RQOLI instrument to those clients using mail

survey methods; compiling the data obtained from the mail survey for

statistical analysis.

Impact Study on Journal Article Publications and Citations for

Rehabilitation Education Faculty Members: 1974-1997. Used PsycLit and

Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), electronic data bases, to determine

publication frequency for 381 rehabilitation faculty members over a 23 year

period. Identified the 22 most prolific authors and calculated their

citation rates identifying their most cited article (lead investigator, Dr.

Dan Cook, literature reviewer, and Project Manager, Wayland Roberts).

Participatory Action Research Empowerment Group Study, Phase 1. Qualitative

study on effects of teaching and utilizing power with principles. Used a

participatory action research model with a group that consisted of staff &

administrators of a service provider organization and persons with

developmental disabilities that are recipients of those services. Group

determined that it would develop a program to explore ways of enabling self-

employment. Research team then developed some basic concepts of Supported

Self-Employment (SSE). (Lead investigator, Jeanne Neath; Project Manger,

literature reviewer, Wayland Roberts)

Empowerment Group Study report on development of the Self Employment

Advisory group (SEAG) Phase 2. Participatory Action Research project

studied group dynamics when utilizing power with principles (continuation

of same group from Phase 1) while developing a program to enable self-

employment for persons with developmental disabilities. (Co-investigators,

Jeanne Neath; Project Manger, literature reviewer, Wayland Roberts)

Empowerment Group Study report on the Community Self-Employment Loan Fund

(C SELF) Phase 3. A continuing qualitative study of a micro-loan

organization that is primarily to be run by and for persons with

developmental disabilities (lead investigator, Wayland Roberts).

Evaluation of Academically Distressed Schools in Arkansas. Using 1995-1998

Arkansas Dept. of Education data to study the effects of an intervention

being used to raise student performance in schools performing below the

25th percentile on SAT-9. Utilized a doubly multivariate, repeated measures

design with a cohort of students from the 26th - 35th percentile that are

not receiving the intervention. (Investigators, Wayland Roberts and Kristy

Wilson).

Economic Impact of Supported Employment Services in N.W. Arkansas.

Evaluated the effects of Supported Employment services on income and public

assistance utilizing data obtained from a sample of N.W. Arkansas supported

employment service recipients (statistical analysis and paper development

under the direction of Dr. Sean Mulvenon; project manager and lead

investigator, Wayland Roberts).

University Teaching

Vocational Evaluation (graduate, masters). In addition to teaching, held

weekly labs for the students demonstrating, hands on, various commercial

evaluation equipment and commercially available test, such as the Valpar

series. (1998)

Rehabilitation Foundations (graduate, masters) taught section on supported

employment and gave a brief introduction to factors involved when working

with persons with MR/DD. Presented classroom lectures and facilitated

interaction on Supported Employment. (1997)

Independent Living (graduate, masters), taught section on Empowerment and

its various issues and including the use of Quality of Life as an outcome

measure. Covered issues, importance and measurement of empowerment and QOL.
