Experience
Long Island University-Brooklyn Campus
September 2009-May 2011 Cosmetic Chemist Trainee Brooklyn, NY
The graduate program in Cosmetic Sciences at Long Island University provided an appropriate blend of
course work in the areas of physical pharmacy, methods of pharmaceutical analysis, dosage form design,
cosmetic and dermatological formulations and raw materials. Also, received practical training in
transdermal preparations under the guidance of Dr. Fotios Plakogiannis, and under the guidance of Dr.
Almas Babar received practical training in the area of cosmetic sciences, and learned about formulation,
manufacture and stability testing and evaluation of Cosmetic, Toiletry and Pharmaceutical topical
products.
Knowledge in sensory products, skin toners, skin moisturizing products, sun-screen products, hair
care products, aerosol technology, anti-perspirant/deodorants, lipsticks/coloring,
emulsions/suspensions and pharmaceutical/cosmeceuticals products. These disciplines and
practical training are coupled with their applications to the development and formulation of
cosmetic products.
Other related knowledge concepts are the following: aerosol principles (propellants, containers,
valves and actuators systems), fundamental laws of liquids and gases, pH, viscosity, solubility,
thermodynamics and colligative properties.
Understanding of the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act and regulations, Good Manufacturing
Practices, Good Laboratory Practices and Standard Operating Procedures.
Materials Characterization Center, Inc-San Juan P.R
June 2006-August 2009 Research Technician San Juan, P.R.
Research Technician under the guidance of Dr. Edgard Resto in the area of materials characterization
and surface analyses (3 years of experience). Worked in the Materials Characterization Center (MCC)
division. MCC is a private characterization center that gives services to pharmaceutical, medical division,
biotechnology and electronic companies in Puerto Rico and helps the academic community. MCC
provides quality control and quality assurance to companies following SOP’s, GMP’s and GLP’s
procedures and FDA regulations.
MCC seeks to strengthen industrial activity by providing expeditious and reliable solutions to
problems faced by manufacturing operations. Some of the typical applications of the MCC’s
facilities are the following: determination of the chemical structure of unknown compounds,
mixture analysis, analysis and identification of impurities, identification of trace compounds,
organic volatiles identification (OVI) and characterization of chemical deposits on surface.
As a research technician had worked in projects of characterization and identification of foreign
materials that can be presented in tablets, raw materials, polymers, metallic or semiconductor
materials, unknown solids or liquids, electronic devices, coating or medical devices (example:
instrumentation used for arthroscopic surgeries). Performed wet chemistry, such as, titrations,
pH, viscosity, centrifugation, extractions and lyophilization.
The services that MCC offers contain the following techniques: Mass Spectroscopy-GC, Fourier
Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR and ATR), Surface Microscopy and Spectroscopy
(Scanning Electron Microscopy/Electron Dispersive Spectroscopy), DIFFERENTIAL SCANNING
CALORIMETER (DSC), THERMOGRAVIMETRIC ANALYZER (TGA), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Nuclear
Magnetic Resonance (NMR).
Expertise in FTIR and SEM/EDS instruments.
Expertise in Surface Microscopy and Spectroscopy analysis.
University of Puerto Rico - Río Piedras
June 2004- June 2008 Research Assistant San Juan, P.R.
Research Assistant under the guidance of Dr. Carlos Torres in special a program of educational
chemistry called ‘’ Interactive Problem- analysis Aids: a tool to help students relate concepts to problem-
solving at any time in the area of general chemistry ’’ supported by ESCoP, NASA.
Educational Chemistry Research
August 2004- May 2005 Research Assistant San Juan, P.R.
Research Assistant under the guidance of Dr. Jorge L. Colón, research in Inorganic Chemistry with the
project "Photochemical and photo physical characterization of 1 Pyrenemethylamine in zirconium
Phosphate layers materials’’.
