SELECTED ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Revenue Recovery
Assisted Enron Estate Legal Staff by providing eDiscovery documentation and
evidence that led to capital recovery of $9.7 billion for Corporate
Investors and Shareholders from Financial Institutions.
Project Development
Collaborated in planning of $52 million acute care hospital. Worked in
close collaboration with the General Partner on construction and budget
costs for proposed Lifeline Regional Medical Center, a $52M acute care
hospital with medical office buildings in northeast Harris County. Result:
General Partner elected to go with another firm which to date has been
unable to start the project.
Converted floundering 50-bed Psychiatric Hospital unit to a profitable
Residential Treatment Center. Worked in close collaboration with the State
Health Planning Commission for approval and licensure. Oversaw renovation,
reassigned and hired new staff where necessary. Result: Facility was
licensed and approved with minimal renovation cost and no code violations.
Increased patient census and revenue by $2M within the first year of
operation.
Developed and constructed new Psychiatric Hospital in underserved rural
area. Consulted with Director of State Health Planning Commission regarding
optimal location for a new Hospital to serve small communities in S.E.
Oklahoma. Result: Delivered a new 40-bed Hospital, employing 90 people, on
time and within budget.
Assisted Hospital Management Company in finding lenders for new projects.
Obtained financing for two hospital projects in Louisiana and Texas at a
cost of $34M. Result: Projects were cancelled due to Hurricanes Rita and
Katrina
Mergers and Acquisitions
Acquired the Twelve Oaks Hospital, Sharpstown Hospital and Medical Office
Buildings for $25M. Developed and obtained the financing to construct a
Long Term Hospital in Clear Lake for $20M. Result: Increased the
Corporations Asset Portfolio.
Acquired the 100-bed Park North General Hospital in San Antonio, Texas;
achieved CON approval for a 64-bed psychiatric hospital in Lawton,
Oklahoma; directed all phases of construction and development of a 100-bed
psychiatric hospital in Webster, Texas and a 50-bed expansion of Laurelwood
Hospital in The Woodlands, Texas. Result: The successful sale of assets to
National Medical Enterprises in 1985.
Responsible for acquiring new hospitals and growing new business. Acquired
two hospitals and obtained Certificate of Need Approval to construct two
new hospitals in the state of Texas, and two in Louisiana. Result: The
successful sale of assets to American Medical International in 1982.
Responsible for new hospital development and strategic planning throughout
a region comprising eleven states in the Pacific West Acquired two
hospitals in California, and one hospital in Oregon. Result: Contributed to
the company becoming the second largest investor owned hospital management
company in the world.
Operations Management
Recruited to turn around unprofitable Retirement Center. Facility losing
$750K annually and borrowing working capital to meet payroll. Restructured
practices (including staffing/contract labor/overtime reductions and
stricter purchasing controls) to reach a break-even point. Instituted
controls, increased census from 80% to full capacity with waiting list.
Result: Achieved net income of $250K in first year after repayment $4M in
debt.
Systematically reduced contract labor expenses for rehabilitation facility
by 40%. Analyzed the profitability of each nursing home in the State,
eliminated unprofitable contracts. Hired full time permanent staff and
consolidated work schedules. Result: Slashed expenses from $400K to
$160K/month; increased productivity by 25% over 12-month period.
Staffing and Recruitment
Resolved high priority executive level staffing problem. Initiated
newsletter advertising key vacancies in facilities throughout the Division.
Generated interest from a qualified Director from another Hospital;
promoted another employee to fill that vacancy. Result: Replacing temporary
Director resulted in decreased compensation expense, better continuity in
Administrative staff, new business development, and increased
profitability.
Initiated new recruiting measures to solve staffing problems. Traveled to
each location and instituted new measures to recruit and retain competent
Directors. Result: Vacancies filled within 30 days to the complete
satisfaction of the hospital administration; saved $250K annually in
reduced contract labor expenses.
