In 1994, Albany, GA was flooded by tropical storm Alberto. 30,000 people
were made homeless. 4 schools were damaged beyond repair. None of the
schools could be rebuilt due to their location within the flood plain. As
Finance chairman, it was my job to work with the Asst. Superintendent for
Business Affairs to ensure that we met all federal regulations and
guidelines. Also,
we worked together to publish the Request For Quote (RFQ) for Project
Management of building 3 new schools and upgrading 5 more.
To manage a project of this scope, I implemented a monthly review of
expenditures. This process called for review of actual costs against
planned expenses and discussion of variances. Learnings were identified and
captured for future application. Current month and next month were reviewed
and changes approved as needed. After initial resistance, this process was
embraced by all involved... feedback was that individuals felt more
involved and their efforts were recognized.
