I wrote many of these systems, and maintain others.
For the past 10 years I have been the primary (really, 'sole') technical
support person for all of our University's Financial Aid programming; we
process about $42 million in Financial Aid award money for our students
each year.
I also led the effort to develop a warehouse for our shop use, so that
many non-Enterprise applications could get read-only data out of our
Enterprise tables. We currently run a campus
with about 10,000 students, so the data volume is not enormous. A few of
our tables run to a million-plus records,
but not many.
Current languages used, at the UW-L: PL/SQL, SQL and SQL Plus; PeopleCode
and all related PeopleSoft tools,
such as SQR; MFCOBOL where necessary for legacy systems; Visual Basic with
MS Access, and the entire suite of MS desktop products; MS-DOS batch script
commands. I know .html fairly well, and am comfortable with DreamWeaver as
a screen support package. I work with Java and .jsp pages when needed, but
I prefer PL/SQL, particularly for anything of high complexity.
I write functions, triggers, views and procedures as well as programs. My
specialty! Currently I maintain a library of
approximately 150 functions to access the most important elements from our
data. These are nearly mandatory for
any serious custom data reporting in our shop, owing to the complexity of
PeopleSoft table structures, particularly in
Financial Aid.
I have many years data design experience, and am interested in BEST
solutions. I appreciate elegant design and simplicity. As an interim
Oracle Database Administrator I learned a great deal about the tuning of
queries for performance.
We currently use MS, LINUX and UNIX operating systems, but I am not the one
who writes the scripts for these.
I can read the scripts, however, and I know how to consult a syntax manual
when needed.
I have used delivered report generators such as Brio or PeopleSoft Query,
but prefer, where possible, simply to use SQL Plus. Occasionally I use MS
Access, when the application needs detailed extra input from the user.
I am very fluent in SQL and use TOAD frequently for ad-hoc work. PL/SQL is
my programming language of choice,
because of its power, straightforward syntax and proximity to native SQL
code. I still use it extensively for PeopleSoft work.
GOALS: To provide well-designed, easy-to-maintain, user-friendly data
solutions for my customers.
Systems design and programming have always been my 'highest best use' as a
data analyst; thus I continue in this field
after 30 years.
Because of my many years experience, I can also be thorough about system
documentation. I have excellent written and oral communication skills, and
the ability to work well with users.
