Director Information Security

Top security officer. Responsible for all aspects of Information

Technology Security for Sears Holding Company, a fortune 50 company with

over 43 billion in sales and 322,000 employees. Areas of responsibility

include IT Compliance, Online Security, Security Operations, Access

Control and Enterprise Business Continuity Planning.

. Revamped and modernized entire IT Security department, including

security tools, processes, and solutions in a very complex and legacy

rich environment. Due to complications with the merger of Sears,

Kmart and Lands End along with the creation of new business verticals

such as the online business unit coupled with severe financial

limitations in the past the IT environment had numerous security gaps

and challenges. It was my role to identify and prioritize those gaps

as well as solution ways to close or remediate them.

. Successfully researched, validated and implemented over 10 critical IT

Security solutions including Security Operations Center, Data Loss

Prevention, Identity Management, Intrusion Detection and Intrusion

Prevention Systems, Host Intrusion Prevention Systems, Network Access

Control, Web filtering, Email Encryption, Attack and Pen team, SIEM

and more. These tools and methods were able to reduce overall risk

exposure by 80% in 18 months according to independent 3rd party audit.

. Built a world class team of IT Security Professionals including

getting Sr. Leadership approval for additional headcount during a time

of staff reductions. This allowed an annual savings to the company of

over $500,000 by bringing in house critical skill sets that were being

outsourced. Also allowed greater visibility into security exposures

by bringing critical assessments to systems that had not been

previously tested due to budget constraints.

. Created compelling business cases to present to Sr. Leadership to gain

support for new security initiatives in an environment of limited

resources and numerous competing proposals. Overall budget was over

$15 million for base budget and projects.

. Forged strategic partnerships with key business units including legal,

human resources, loss prevention, ecommerce, and facility management

that enabled unprecedented levels of cooperation and collaboration

towards accomplishing key initiatives. Collaborative approach allowed

leveraging of resources, research, findings, and tools to bring

greater efficiency and simplicity to the environment.

. Took leadership imitative and forged an enterprise class business

continuity planning department. We lead a company campaign to update

Assistant Vice President - Security & Loss Prevention

Reliance is the largest private sector company in India with annual

revenues of over $44 billion and over 225,000 employees and contractors.

Worked in the Retail division as the Subject Matter Expert for loss

prevention, corporate security & information security as well as an

integral part of the leadership team overseeing all security facets of

one of the largest retail start-ups in history. Retail operations

spanned 13 different retail formats in addition to end to end supply

chain operations in the dynamic Indian retail market.

. Brought over as a consultant, but promoted to AVP position within

first 6 weeks based on demonstrated leadership ability.

. Lead a team of over 20 direct reports including 12 Director level

(most of whom were 20+ year veterans and Sr. Officers from Indian

Armed Forces); and responsible for over 3,450 SLP team members. Had

to overcome not only all the challenges associated with such a dynamic

start-up but do so in an environment deficient of normal

infrastructure support and overcoming the cultural differences that

existed in moving from the U.S. to India. The team and I went on to

accomplish very demanding and far reaching objectives.

. Implemented and adapted international best practices in SLP for the

unique requirements of retail in India.

. Authored and executed Standard Operating Procedures across all 13

retail formats and Distribution & Logistics including Fraud, Info

Security, Loss Prevention and Control Room functions.

formats and functions of Reliance Retail.

. Co-Created the design basis for SLP systems selection, procurement,

placement and deployment including EAS, RFID, CCTV, intruder and fire

alert systems, monitoring & control room systems, anti-shoplifting

devices, video analytics, access control, and vehicle tracking.

. Reduced shrink rates from over 7% to less than 1% in less than 18

months.

. Created corporate communication, training and awareness campaigns

around security, shoplifting and employee theft.

. Conducted root cause analysis of process related shrink and worked

with key members of the business and operation team to streamline

processes, and improve execution. Efforts resulted in 13% staff

reduction and a 4%t reduction in shrink.

. Developed strong partnerships with key internal teams across all

formats and functions to foster a culture of security and loss

prevention throughout the organization.

. Authored positioned based training material that was delivered to

. Introduced Impression of Control program for Control Room Operations,

in preparation of and during actual crisis events such as protests,

fires, floods, infrastructure failure and high-level clandestine

investigations.

. Created business model and phase roll out plans for Security

Monitoring and Response service to introduce additional revenue

streams to the organization to turn what is traditionally considered a

cost center into a profit generating center. Was able to see phase-

one strategic business to business implementation complete before

departure.

. Developed safety and crisis response model utilizing existing

resources to augment lack of emergency response infrastructure in

India for Reliance employees and their families for incidents

occurring away from company facilities. This was widely recognized as

District Assets Protection Team Leader

Manage all aspects of asset protection strategy and execution, including

safety, security, theft and fraud for 20 stores, a $1.9M operating budget

and up to 20 exempt professionals and 120 non-exempt employees for Target

Corporation, a $65 Billion company with over 351,000 employees.

. Third, of 161 districts in 2004 in terms of results versus goal for

overall team performance in key areas: employee theft, shoplifter

apprehensions, check & credit card fraud, operational controls, budget

management, bad stops and focus department execution.

. One of only five districts recognized, through "traffic light"

performance measurement system, as "green light" level performers for

both internal and external theft resolution, while simultaneously

reducing headcount 40%; appointed captain of the Core Results

Committee that shared these best practices with the region and the

chain.

. Conceptualized and implemented a "Leadership Enrichment Training"

program for succession planning for single and multi-unit field asset

protection personnel; resulting program served as model for chain-wide

rollout.

. Reduced employee turnover by 73% over three years through the

development of a targeted recruitment program; identified qualities

and characteristics of top performers and used them as selection

criteria for recruiting, selection, training, and retention policies

and procedures.

. Piloted designated trainer program that utilized top performers to

teach techniques to address shoplifter detection deficiency as

identified through gap analysis; apprehensions increased 110% from

2003 to 2004 and 150% from 2004 to 2005. Program was subsequently

rolled out to entire region.

. Eliminated exposure caused by third shift perimeter violations;

collaborated with field operations to conduct a vulnerability

assessment and implement access control procedures to provide safety
