Director - Process Quality Improvement
1991-2009
Responsible for the establishment and continuous improvement of the process
quality capability at Master Chemical Corp. Identified high leverage
organizational processes and brought them under control with action plans
and roadmaps for continuous improvement. Ensured these processes were
interdependent and synergistic. Served as the in-house expert on planned
change, facilitated cross-functional teams in problem-solving key business
issues and functioned as program manager for new product development phase-
gate process.
. Created a new department, Process Quality Improvement, focused on
establishment of a corporate wide mindset of continuous improvement,
lean manufacturing principles and adoption of the Toyota Production
System.
. Facilitated team of product development chemists, analytical chemist,
data analyst and health and safety personnel through critical thinking
to understand and eliminate the failure of new products to pass
toxicity review. Released 8 new products into Phase 3 Field Testing
within 3 months.
. Participated on a 6-person team to conduct a value stream analysis of
production processes. Within 6 months the team developed and
implemented solutions using lean manufacturing principles resulting in
a $1M reduction in inventory, eliminated the need for a $2.5M warehouse
addition and eliminated the need for an offsite warehouse that had an
annual cost of $250,000.
. Evaluated standards requirements, third party registrars, customer
requirements and Master Chemical's processes to select the most
appropriate quality certifications. Achieved certifications to
Navistar Quality System, ISO 9002:1994, ISO 9001:1994, QS 9000, QS 9000
Tooling and Equipment Supplement, ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 9001:2008.
. Selected and trained a group of 25 internal auditors. Created an
Internal Auditor Handbook. Established a revolving 2 year internal
audit plan for all key processes, yearly internal audit schedule and
visual tracking system. Achieved ISO 9001 certification, with the
internal audit program consistently called out in the third party audit
as a strength of the business process.
. Created a visual corrective action process utilizing the critical
thinking model, trained the organization on its use and oversaw
implementation and continuous improvement of the process. Problem
solving became a part of the business process, enabled Master Chemical
to meet ISO 9001 requirements, and overcame a problem avoidance
mindset.

1978-1991
Responsible for monitoring, understanding and preparing company response to
local, state, federal and international laws and regulations pertaining to
health, safety, environmental affairs and transportation. Served as contact
for product safety and liability issues involving employees, distributors,
end users and other interested parties (community representatives,
neighbors, physicians, unions, etc.). Reviewed and approved raw materials.
Prepared MSDSs for finished products. Oversaw toxicological testing of
product formulas. Managed training and implementation of in-house hazard
communication program. Served as organization's key representative to
major trade associations including Independent Lubricant Manufacturers'
Association, Chemical Manufacturers' Association, and Automotive Industry
Action Group.
. Created the first Health, Safety and Environmental Affairs Department
for the organization, bringing it into compliance with regulations,
safe guarding employee and customer health, and protecting the
environment.
. Prepared and presented testimony before U.S. Congressional
subcommittee, federal OSHA hearing, state congressional committee and
state OSHA agency regarding Hazard Communications Standard. Along with
other industry testimony, impacted the regulations to recognize small
business needs and trade secret issues thus preserving tremendous
economic benefit of product formulations while still protecting worker
health and safety.
. Developed and presented over 300 educational programs, including video
programs, for in-house and field personnel, distributors, customers and
professional organizations enhancing Master Chemical's reputation as an
educational leader in the metalworking fluid industry.
. Redesigned labels for over 350 products to meet regulatory and duty to
warn requirements. Achieved regulatory compliance and product
liability protection for entire line of products.
. Testified before worker's compensation court regarding health & safety
aspects of product and presented toxicity test data. Case was
dismissed saving all costs to customer and strengthening ties with
customer relative to product service and safety.
Chemist
1977-1978
Responsible for providing technical data and guidance to sales force,
distributors and customers on status and use of products. Tested on
average 50 customer used product samples per day and prepared reports
summarizing data and recommending adjustments to improve performance and
extend life of fluid. Visited customer sites with sales force or
distributor to evaluate conditions and recommend improvements.
. Created first set of documented quality control specifications for each
test used on each finished product. Consistency and improvement
enabled through documented data and procedures.
