Neil Edward Goldberg
This resume will highlight an experienced background, proven success,
understanding of profit and loss, and a mature individual. The experience
is in sales, operations - all areas of retailing, manufacturing/sales,
sales management in goods, public relations/services w/individuals and
businesses.
I was sent to Hawaii to help modernize/revitalize its largest specialty
store group. McInerny Ltd needed help in nearly every area that led to
volume/bottom line. We featured apparel, footwear, accessories, gifts,
jewelry, cosmetics, home, and food. We were owned by a major national chain
needing someone to drive the store's business w/hard work, proven basics,
creativity, motivation.
We gave the team the right merchandise to sell - not perfect, but that fit
the needs: this took a little time of course, but within a few months the
300 employees were 'rarin' to go, with lasting motivation, complete
confidence in the leadership, and the best customer service in the South
Pacific. Each employee knew exactly how they contributed to the overall
company performance. The team had a part as each department was given a
voice. Product knowledge was conveyed by management or vendors so that each
team member knew enough about the entire store that they were excellent
store representatives. I was responsible for preparing budgets and
maintaining them, planning, presentation/display, and, as a merchandise
manager, growing margins as volume grew, finding where we could grow - and
where we could not - profitably.
As I earned the promotion to Vice President Sales and Operations (1972) we
had grown to 15 stores: three shopping center anchors and a dozen smaller
stores on all Islands. As the 'District Manager' (all the Islands = my
district), I visited all stores regularly, speaking to the team and
customers alike. In 1981 the company was sold to Japanese interests in
their first retailing venture in Hawaii. The new owners brought in their
own management, and I focused on other areas. Within a few years they asked
me to return, which I did (1990-96), to focus on the very competitive and
lucrative visitor division, where I succeeded in revamping our customer
service efforts, recapturing the important visitors through vigorous ad and
PR campaigns, redirecting staff and adding departments and merchandise for
the tourists that had been lacking or conceded to the competition.
In the interim (1982-1990) I was President/Sales Manager for HonTexPrint,
printing textiles for our own use (Honolulu Gold Clothing Co.), and other
companies: apparel, table linens, uniforms (medical etc). I founded,
enjoyed success, and sold Whales and Friends, a company that produced and
licensed popular artist's images on various products. I was also President
and GMM for Calabash Mfg Corp, a group of 8 stores and a manufacturing
facility that needed fine tuning and some 'troubleshooting' for a potential
sale after its Swiss owners returned to Europe. I also consulted to Malia
International, a vendor to mainland and Hawaii stores - two of their own.
In 1996, I was hired to implement a store for a 25,000 member private
organization that brought them an outlet for electronics, appliances,
kitchen items, accessories, and the like. 2004 I became PT Seattle Area
Director for a national charity: organizing, PR, visits to potential
donors, event production, with fundraising as the goal (2004-present).
We moved to WA in 2000 to be near our 4 sons. Bachelors degree: Chaminade
University, Honolulu. Military service: U.S. Navy. Keeping current in
business, I am also on the Advisory Board for the Business Management
Program at Lake Washington Technical College.
