PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES, Yorktown Heights, NY 1994 – 2009
T.J. Watson Research Center
Environmental, Chemical, Toxicology and Safety Engineer
Responsibilities include Chemical, Environmental and Safety Services, Chemical-Hygiene Program
Instructor, Hazardous Communication (Right-to-Know) Material-Safety-Data program owner, Chemical
Authorization, Coordinator of the Contractor Chemical Program, Laboratory Auditing, and Site TSCA
Coordinator for Importing and Exporting chemicals worldwide. Worked with over 12,000 unique
chemical formula constituents and controlled over 12,000 containers for renowned PhD chemists and
physicists.
• Implemented the first green-chemical-cleaner program for IBM. During my ownership, the ISO
14001 program passed all Bureau VERITAS Certification audits with only minor suggestions for
improvement.
• Incorporated a Risk-Analysis Program into the site’s Environmental Management System, which
included identifying all building systems and human resources that could affect employee safety,
assessing environmental risks, and quantifying potential loss of company assets. Based on this data,
prioritized the high-risk building areas and developed plans to address areas of concern. During my
tenure, the site was recognized as an OSHA Star site and It was also recognized by an internal IBM
award: the Chairman’s Citation for Environmental Excellence.
• Communicated reports to management in order to obtain financial and human resource needs.
• Reviewed and processed chemical orders for over 200 scientists; this included providing technical
expertise for assessment of chemical hazards based on OSHA, EPA, NYS DEC, IBM Corporate
regulations, and Global Logistics Security Plans to ensure compliance to all regulatory standards.
Worked closely with colleagues to define safety standards for the emerging field of nano-science.
• Located unique custom synthesis chemicals, arranged for shipment of minimum quantities required
and in the appropriate purities, worked with manufacturers to ensure availability and delivery to meet
stated deadlines, enabling IBM to retain for over a decade its lead in patent generation.
• Ensured proper control of all chemicals on site in compliance with requirements of the U.S.
Department of Transportation and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
• Managed a variety of databases associated with Watson’s electronic Chemical-Inventory-System
including; materials constituents, DOT, OSHA, EPA, NYS Fire Code, chemical hazards,
manufacturer information, shelf-life, training and classification of materials for specific laboratory
requirements.
• Member of the Watson Emergency Response Team including: HAZMAT, Fire Brigade, Confined
Space, First Aid/ Blood-Borne Pathogen, CPR, and a member of IBM United States Emergency-
Response Team.
• Assisted in the Labor Day Shutdown Coordination, the site’s annual building shutdown for electrical
and mechanical maintenance. Typically, ~38 major projects ($750K) are scheduled involving ~100
IBM staff and 150+ contractors, all of whom work over 4,500 hours during this three-day period. In
addition to advance planning for this massive event as a member of the core team, provided project-
database management, security administration, and emergency response.
• As Environmental Noise Program Coordinator, conducted annual external noise surveys and
addressed neighbor concerns associated with construction noise.
• Audited entire IBM site to ensure unapproved contractor chemicals were removed, reduced
contractor chemical inventory to meet actual usage needs, corrected labeling, provided contractor
training, and completed monthly training audits for all contractors on site resulting in 100%
compliance.
