RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
[pic]
Master of Philosophy (First Class):
My research was based primarily on the health and welfare of livestock when
transported by sea. One environmental factor concerning cattle and sheep
when transported is the presence of high measurements of aerial ammonia.
The nine months of research was carried out in climate controlled chambers
where behavioural data on sheep and cattle was collected twice daily, along
with feed and water intake. Pre and post ammonia blood samples were taken
and analysed for changes in haematological and immunological parameters,
along with bronchi-alveolar and trans-tracheal lavages.
Results were conclusive that ammonia does have a significant effect on
sheep and cattle but the severity is not certain, if of a concern. Regular
reporting, conferencing and communication were extensive throughout the
data collection and intricate data analysis continued for a further 6
months before a final report was submitted.
Honours Degree (First Class):
This research on environmental enrichment involved the design and
implementation of four enrichment strategies, as well as analysing the
animals' behavioural routines and personalities to conclude their
successfulness. My research also involved collating data on the
reproductive cycle and parental care of the Mahogany Glider. Behavioural
ethograms were also constructed after many hours of data collection during
their night time activities.
From the data collection on the reproductive cycles and parental care of
the gliders, I am currently working on a research paper to be submitted to
Applied Animal Behaviour Science, as no research has been carried out on
these highly endangered Mahogany Gliders to date.
Wildlife Survey of the Helidon Hills Area:
I conducted a scientific survey of identifying terrestrial vertebrates in
the Helidon Hills, monitoring local species and critically examining their
relationship with their environment.
After resulting with an inventory of wildlife, I researched methodology
applicable to wildlife conservation, monitoring and resource management.
From the results of the survey I then formulated an ecological hypothesis
"the population dynamics of the Common Brushtail Possum; abundance, density
related factors and status", to address wildlife management issues
developing an experimental design to guide sampling to provide answers.
