QUALIFICATIONS
I am a detail-oriented, self-starter with excellent verbal and written
communication skills. I can read the most complex blue prints and I know
how to use basic computer programs. I have 40 years of experience in the
manufacturing world. My diversified work experience will impart invaluable
information throughout your company.
EXPERIENCE
Purchasing
As an expediter I created a plan to improve deliveries to 98% on time.
Promoted to buyer and made suppliers an extension of our company, reducing
budget $1,000,000.
As purchasing manager, I honed people skills and negotiating skills,
reducing cost $12,000,000.
Wrote policy and procedure manual for purchasing department.
Received first ever company stock bonus and added responsibility of
supervising shipping and receiving.
Commodities I Bought:
- Tooling, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical power transmission
components
- Raw Materials: castings, forgings, steel plate, bar stock, tubing
- Sub-contract fabricating and sub-contract machining
Shipping & Receiving:
First task, I reduced the number of freight carriers coming and going
receiving better discounts.
Analyzed that we spent more money fixing 10-year old forklifts than renting
five dependable forklifts.
Improved deliveries to my internal customers, eliminated problem of
materials disappearing off the dock.
I found out freight discounts don't mean anything if the trucking company
goes bankrupt.
I ensured that material handlers now worked a full day, and internal
customers received their parts the same day.
The maintenance person assigned to repair forklifts found other
responsibilities.
Wrote policy and procedure manual for shipping and receiving department.
Inventory:
In addition to supervising purchasing and receiving departments, I was
asked to analyze our inventory.
I revamped the inventory movement by returning, scrapping, discounting,
and revising order quantities.
I reduced our inventory from $ 4,000,000 to $3,000,000 and added critical
items.
With the help of the IT department we computerized ordering. We could also
analyze turnover.
I started cycle counting so there were no surprises at the end of the year.
The company's inventory count became so reliable that the auditor would
only spot check.
Wrote the policy and procedure manual for the inventory department.
Customers thanked us for better response time for repair parts.
Enthusiasm returned to department employees, compliments came from other
departments.
Plant Services:
I still worked in and managed all the departments shown above.
Because of theft, I replaced the guard service, hired new security
officers, supervised and gave them goals.
I hired a landscaping service for weekly lawn and shrub maintenance because
impressions are important.
Project Management:
Customers knew they could count on me for an honest assessment of their
presses' status.
Monitored milestones through sales, engineering, fabrication, machine shop,
assembly and final shipping.
Continuous Improvement:
I became a facilitator of new ideas by teaching the younger, shyer
employees how to communicate with management. I encouraged them to speak up
and take credit for their ideas. Formal continuous improvement evolved, and
I was a leader in this area. I made continuous improvement contagious.
I learned at an early age how to work, work smart, how to treat people and
how to save money.
Handyman Talent:
My family owned several apartment buildings in Chicago and from the time I
could walk my dad would take me with him to the buildings. My first job was
picking up garbage around the properties. By age 8 he promoted me to
washing and vacuuming hallways, by age 12 he was promoted me to painting.
By age 16 he bought me a car so after school and through college I could
fill the stokers with coal and make necessary repairs to plumbing,
electrical outlets, repaired the wood porches and doors. The good news is I
never had time to get in trouble. I learned a lot. Woodworking became a
serious hobby. I sold most of what I made. Repairing and refinishing
furniture is fun for me but it does not pay the bills.
EDUCATION
City of Chicago Junior Colleges
. completed prerequisite classes for a four year college
University of Chicago
. completed one year program to earn an Advanced Management Certificate
Illinois Institute of Technology
6 credit hours of material management classes
My higher education was limited to the Chicago City Jr. College system
until I had the opportunity to attend the University of Chicago for one
year to earn a "Certificate in Advanced Management" degree. (At the
company's expense) I accepted. Four days a week thirty middle managers
from all different back rounds gathered at the UC. Every week for 52
weeks we were given a file on a real company (no real name) and broken up
into teams to find the best solution to whatever problem that company had
come to the University of Chicago to solve and present your teams solution
at the end of the week to your classmates. I think this is where Donald
Trump came up with his TV show. After giving our presentations at the end
of the week you got critiqued by our peers and the professors who really
handled the case. We learned how everything really ended. This was an
education.
