AREAS OF EXPERTISE
Writing
Kristin has excellent organizational, written, and analytical skills and
superior command of grammar and composition. She is a logical writer and is
especially adept at utilizing form, structure, organization, and paragraph
development to make any complex document easier for the reader to
comprehend. She has the ability to construct a supported and compelling
argument in favor of a particular thesis. She is comfortable with
paraphrasing and summarizing outside sources in researched documents and is
meticulous in building bibliographies and references cited lists. She is
able to change tone and vocabulary according to intended audience.
Examples from "Major Written Contributions to Publications," below, are the
best demonstration of her writing style and abilities; samples are
available upon request.
Editing
Kristin is an excellent editor, from the organization/structure level of a
document down to details of punctuation. Typically, she edits documents for
organization, consistency, logic, data/content accuracy, clarity, grammar,
spelling, punctuation, and conformity with style and format. She is capable
of adapting her editing speed and thoroughness according to the writer's
wishes; for a thorough and detailed edit, including data accuracy, she
averages approximately 2-3 pages per hour, and for proofreading, she
averages 8 pages per hour.
Kristin seeks a relationship of trust with writers whose work she edits.
She ensures that her critiques are courteous; she does not scold. She
emphasizes to writers that when she gives specific advice, ultimately the
decision is up to the writer whether to take this advice. She is careful to
use Track Changes when necessary and does not engage in subversive editing.
She is consistent and clear about which global edits or changes are
necessary for grammar or style reasons, and not a matter of personal
preference, and is always happy to communicate this to the writer.
At Juneau Biosciences:
. She performed revisions on articles that came back from peer reviews
at journals. She was careful to document changes made in response to
reviewers' comments or to justify why changes were not made.
. When submitting articles to journals, she followed style requirements
to the letter whenever possible, rather than leaving that extra work
for production people at the journal.
At SWCA:
. She compiled a corporate style guide for the Natural Resources Group.
The Chicago Manual of Style (15th edition) and Scientific Style and
Format (the Council of Biology Editors manual; 6th edition) were the
primary sources used in compilation of this style guide. She received
input from scientists and other editors in the company, and made many
style decisions based on ease of use and simplicity.
. On the Functional Assessment of Wetlands and Wildlife in the Salt Lake
County Shorelands SAMP Area, she provided the report with extensive
content and technical edits, as well as necessary clarity, focus, and
organization. She also helped to make the appendixes legible to
readers by transforming raw data calculations into "worksheets" for
the formulas of the Great Salt Lake Model.
. Her editing was instrumental in the success and readability of the
Kern River 2003 Expansion Project. This multi-year, cultural resources
data recovery project was reported in seven volumes of several
thousand pages, written by more than thirty authors. She developed and
maintained a project-specific style guide, edited all documents, and
communicated with all authors and project managers regarding document
process and progress.
Ability to Read and Operate in Unfamiliar and Diverse Fields, Projects, and
Genres
As evidenced from her past work history, Kristin has the ability to work
with diverse and unfamiliar fields of knowledge. This ability can be
attributed to her love of learning and her reading comprehension skill. She
has successfully written for applied sciences and research sciences;
environmental science, land management, archaeology, genomics, and
medicine; academia and government; lay audiences and experts. Written
genres include National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents,
vegetation and wildlife surveys, wetlands delineations, biological
assessments, other planning documents, class III and class I cultural
resource inventory reports, archaeological site forms, white papers,
technical reports, academic review articles, heritability studies, genome-
wide association studies, U.S. patents, bibliographies, posters, figures,
tables, maps, and illustrations.
At Juneau Biosciences:
. One of her primary tasks was to keep abreast of published literature
in OB-GYN and genetics research fields and maintain a company library
of sources, ensuring that the scientists and researchers at Juneau
could be provided with the most up-to-date research on pertinent
subjects. This required a great deal of reading and continual
learning.
At SWCA:
. Her work on the Moab/Monticello Resource Management Plan and
Environmental Impact Statement best demonstrates her ability to
assemble information into a final written product. She culled
documents for data and condensed and reorganized the data to reflect
the baseline scenario and impact indicator in a format suitable for
impacts analysis. During analysis she utilized GIS data, the
Alternatives Matrixes, appendixes, and other documents to determine
which resources would have an impact, quantitative or qualitative, on
mineral resource development in the Moab and Monticello Planning
Areas. This analysis was illustrated by clear and useful tables as
needed.
Research
Related to Kristin's ability to quickly learn new fields of knowledge is
her research ability. She is adept at reading a piece of source material
and quickly assessing its value and utility for a particular purpose. She
has primarily used ResearchSoft Endnote (research and reference software),
university libraries, and internet search engines (including Boolean search
parameters) and online databases for her research purposes. If there is
information to find, she will find it.
At Juneau Biosciences, research was one of her major occupations.
. She kept abreast of published literature in OB-GYN and genetics
research fields.
. She maintained a company library of sources.
. She assembled summaries and literature reviews of specific topics
requested by doctors and scientists.
. She conducted literature searches for patent applications.
At SWCA:
. The Biodiversity in the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area
project demonstrates her research ability. She completed the design of
and maintained a literature database that ultimately produced six-page
reports on any given plant or animal species in the NRA for which
literature was collected. She edited and contributed content
suggestions to reports on biodiversity testing and monitoring, on the
physical characteristics of the NRA, and on vegetation, wildlife, and
wetlands surveys.
Data
The data behind a scientific project or report is usually the purview of
the scientists; however, Kristin has proven herself adept at checking data
and facts for consistency and integrity and at laying data out in tabular
format so that all information is easy to understand. In this regard, her
dedication to scientific accuracy and precision is as high as any
scientist's. She has designed data and document management procedures and
protocols for large projects that maximize preservation of correct data and
increase chances for catching incorrect data.
At Juneau Biosciences:
. She developed an Access database that would prepare several hundred LD
block tables for patent applications, thereby slashing time for table
preparation from 30+ hours to only a few hours.
At SWCA:
. The Kern River 2003 Expansion Project is the best example of her data
protection abilities. To meet the QA/QC challenge of working on such a
complex report, she developed and maintained a style guide, a
formatting guide, templates, processes, and other consistency and
tracking measures in consultation with other document managers. She
communicated with all authors and project managers regarding document
process and progress, developed a system for tracking tables and
figures with maximum ease and minimum error, and designed the final
technical report's layout using FrameMaker.
Style, Design, Layout, Formatting, Production, and Publication
Kristin believes that document design and layout are an integral part of
document comprehension. When she is given free rein in the design of a
document, she is generally conservative. In visual representation of
information, such as tables and figures, she likes to utilize white space.
However, when she is adhering to other specifications of style and format,
such as those of academic journals or government entities, she is
meticulous in conformity. She is adept at using Microsoft Word, Adobe
Acrobat and FrameMaker, and various proprietary and open-source imaging
programs to ensure consistent style and format, pleasing design, and
publication preparedness.
Good examples from her time at Juneau Biosciences are:
. The three posters presented at the 2009 American Society of Human
Genetics annual meeting.
The best examples of her abilities from her time at SWCA are:
. The Corporate Style Guide for the Natural Resources Group,
. Her design of the SWCA Training Series manuals,
. The appendixes of the Functional Assessment of Wetlands and Wildlife
in the Salt Lake County Shorelands SAMP Area, and
. The Kern River 2003 Expansion Project.
Computer and Internet Savvy
Kristin uses the internet for research and to keep up-to-date on topics of
specific interest to her employer and for maximizing efficiency and ease of
working. She is comfortable using Boolean search parameters and accessing
online databases and repositories-everything from PubMed, to international
patents, to grants awarded during the last decade by the New Zealand
Queensland Institute of Medical Research. She is particularly interested in
creative uses of computer applications, tweaks, procedures, and scripts to
solve problems or improve productivity.
She is comfortable with both Microsoft and Macintosh operating systems. She
is extremely proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and
Publisher; the OpenOffice equivalents of Microsoft Office; Adobe FrameMaker
and Acrobat; ISI ResearchSoft Endnote; and Corel WordPerfect and Ventura.
She has some experience with MS Visio, Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, open-
source GIMP and Scribus, and other open-source applications.
Document Management
Document management and flow for large publications with multiple authors
is always challenging, at best, and has the potential for disastrous losses
of data or drafts, at worst. Kristin is adept at perceiving the
requirements of accountability and work flow on a case-by-case basis and
designing a system of document management that is easy for authors to
remember and implement.
Most of Kristin's experience with document management occurred at SWCA,
where multiple authors would produce large documents over the course of
months or years. She has a proven ability to take initiative, resolve
problems, and create improved procedures to ensure tasks are completed in
the most effective manner. The best examples of her document management
abilities include the SWCA Corporate Style Guide for the Natural Resources
Group, the Kern River 2003 Expansion Project, and any of the environmental
impact statement projects (see "Major Written Contributions to
Publications").
Collaboration and Support
Kristin is confident and clear about what she does and does not contribute
to writing projects. Most of her career has been spent as a non-specialist
among specialists; she never forgets that she is in the service of those
with the expertise. She keeps her ego in check regarding her own writing
and editing and is comfortable with giving and receiving constructive
criticism. She is an excellent listener and a courteous communicator. She
is an effective collaborator and excels in supportive roles. She has a
proven ability to take initiative, resolve problems, work on numerous tasks
simultaneously, and remain flexible.
Training/Teaching
Kristin has college teaching and adult training experience and is always
interested in opportunities to learn new topics herself. She taught
Freshman English composition courses, specifically English 1010, College
Writing I and College Writing II, and Interpersonal Communications. She has
hosted office seminars on a variety of writing and document management
topics, and counseled and trained additional part-time or temporary
technical editors on style and document types. She has always been willing
to sit down one-on-one with an author to work on specific problems of his
or her writing. She makes it a point to know (or find out) the answers to
questions of language and style, as well as tricks and best practices of
computer writing. She also operates as a clearinghouse of up-to-date style
and reference material and writing aids for her writing colleagues.
At SWCA:
. She was instrumental in helping to develop the SWCA Training Series of
courses regarding environmental compliance and management, to be
taught by senior scientists and project managers. She participated
heavily in the development of the Environmental Collaboration and
Conflict Management course, the Comprehensive NEPA course, and the
Section 106 series of courses. As a former college instructor, she a
great deal of input regarding teaching strategies, and as an editor
she provided comments with the goal of clarifying the instructional
materials. She also had the primary responsibility for designing the
instructional binders so that they were conducive to learning and for
developing helpful, insightful graphics and figures.
