Author. Many books, primarily in American history and business. Works include:
• A Field Guide to America's History, Facts-on-File, 1984 (1986 paper). This book
helps the reader decipher the past history of the land by unlocking the clues contained
in the local vegetation, place names, topography, industrial history, urban
development, architecture and agriculture, among other areas.
• Island of Hope, Island of Tears, Barnes & Noble, 2003. This was reprinted
under the Barnes and Noble imprint and is sold quite widely through their stores
today. It is an oral history of Ellis Island drawn from archival sources as well as

nearly a hundred primary interviews. A highly regarded portrait of the immigrant
experience, this book focuses on the great transitional journey that drew people
across borders, cultures and, in reality, across centuries as they came to the U.S.
• Harvesters, Facts-on-File 1987. Written as part of a series on work throughout
history, this is a panoramic and accessible exploration of agriculture across the globe
from the Fertile Crescent to modern agribusiness.
